I recently checked out Dara, Center City’s newest spot for Thai food and I was blown away. I let my server take the lead and she had me trying stuff I never had before, and all of it was wonderful. The highlights were definitely the Gang Pu (Southern Thai-style lump crab meat curry served with fried soft shell crab, rice vermicelli and fried betel); the Pla Tod (Fried whole branzino served with m...

Reviews Summary

Dara Thai offers a long-standing casual dining experience with innovative Thai cuisine and a pleasant, exotic atmosphere. While many praise the generous portions of vegetables and variety of vegetarian options, some reviews note inconsistencies in food preparation and service, with occasional complaints about blandness or undercooked ingredients. Despite some service hiccups, the food is generally considered tasty and fresh by many patrons who have returned over the years.

"I'm surprised I haven't written a review for this restaurant yet—my family and I have been coming here for years, and it's our go-to spot for celebrating any occasion. Just a few days ago, we dined here for my graduation. The food is consistently delicious and never disappoints. Absolutely worth a visit!"

"Overall, I was happy with the food. The restaurant’s appearance isn’t as upscale as some other Thai spots, but it’s clean and has nice traditional decor. Our server, who I believe was Hispanic, was very kind and provided great service. The food took a bit longer than expected (around 30 minutes), even though it wasn’t too busy, but they seemed short-staffed in the kitchen. The meal itself was delicious, with a GENEROUS amount of VEGGIES in the noodle dishes, which really elevated the flavors—especially the basil in my dish. Overall, good food and polite service at a fair price.
I'd say if more restaurants balanced their foods with these veggies and flavors like this restaurant did, the others would do better."

"We were able to sit immediately for lunch as there was only one other table being served. The menu is huge.
The yellow curry itself was good but the vegetables in it weren't fully soft. I ordered it 0/5 spice. The pad Thai had chewy/hard noodles like they were not cooked all the way through. It was ordered as 3/5 spice but was like a 0 spice."

The next stop is Dara Thai on the corner of San Francisco and Phoenix Ave, which has been there a long time and offers great Thai food and a nice relaxed vibe. I walk now into my final stop on the downtown food journey at the Lumberyard Brewing Company. They offer good food and drinks and are the spot to drop into on Saturdays if you want to wear your cowboy boots and do some two-stepping.

Dara Thai has plenty of the usual suspects on its 100-plus item menu. Cruise past papaya salad, spring rolls and pad Thai until you hit the Evil Jungle Princess. With its ominous in name and description, the seemingly simple bowl includes chicken with coconut milk, lemongrass and mushrooms with optional beef, pork, tofu or broccoli.

The restaurant blends traditional Thai cuisine with sprinklings from other cultures. Hawaiian Delight, for instance, is sautéed beef with pineapple, bell peppers, onions and carrots. Of course, you will find pad Thai, panang curry soup, spicy tofu, Thai barbecue chicken and crispy shrimp on the menu as well.

until I tried Dara Thai's Jungle Tofu (and it's non-vegetarian counterpart, Evil Jungle Princess). I love the sauce, which includes coconut milk, which really makes this dish. In fact, I can eat the sauce like a soup when the food in it is gone or pour it over one last helping of rice.
