One of our favorite spots to go during our Flagstaff getaway is the Beaver Street Brewery, a cool and relaxed brewery that features the Big Rapid Red ale that has won numerous awards throughout the years. We recommend pairing one of their hearty ales or light IPAs with the cheese and filling fondue to split with the table!. For a main dish, try one of their multi-layered sandwiches to pair well with your crisp and light beer, like the burrata with basil pesto and balsamic vinegar, street tacos with glazed pork belly and cabbage, wood-fired pizza, chicken pot pie with corn and celery, brewer’s platter with bratwurst and caramelized onions, or the Florentine Ravioli with portobello mushrooms, marinara sauce, parmesan cheese, and toasted bread crumbs.

I venture back down Phoenix and turn right on Beaver St. to drop into Beaver Street Brewery which has great food, and a great billiards hall that is usually a very busy spot during the school year. I’m partial to the Enchanted Forest which is a must try pizza at Beaver Street Brewery, and I also love their lunch special drop in, if you haven’t tried it. If I wasn’t stuffed enough with food already I continue my march down Beaver St. and stop in at Macy’s a Flagstaff staple for coffee and delicious pastries, after a good cup of joe I head down to Brandy’s cafe formerly La Bellavia and get more food this is another breakfast mainstay in Downtown.

A few highlights: Mother Road Brewing Company — the nickname of Route 66, which cuts through Flagstaff — began in 2011 and is perhaps best known for its hoppy Tower Station IPA. Dark Sky Brewing Company — a nod to Flagstaff’s designation as the first International Dark Sky City —has a variety of creative brews on tap. As of press time, Dark Sky is pouring a Bake Sale: Coconut Cream Pie sour beer. Beaver Street Brewery — Flagstaff’s first brewpub that opened in 1994 — features mainstay beer options along with a robust food menu featuring everything from pork belly banh mi to wood-fired pizzas.

Beaver Street Brewing - After having a wonderful flight at Wanderlust, my boyfriend and I are now a bit peckish, so we head over to Beaver Street Brewing for more beer and a snack. This place was more restaurant style, and was pretty crowded as it was a Friday night, so we waited about 10 minutes till a spot at the bar opened up to eat and drink. We both order a Beer School Pale Ale- this beer was made in partnership with NAU to promote the Arizona Society of Homebrewers and AZ Craft Brewers Foundation Scholarship.

The first to christen the craft beer scene was Beaver Street Brewing, named for the city’s main drag it’s situated on. The 10-barrel brewpub opened in 1994 after Winnie and Evan Hanseth, a system analyst and mechanical engineer, decided to come back to their Flagstaff home and open the brewpub in a 100-plus-year-old former grocery store. The brewery remains a family business, as Hanseth’s daughter Kelly is now marketing manager and an integral cog in the operation.

Beaver Street Brewing was so close to Motel Du Beau where I was staying that I could have crawled home from there if necessary. I didn’t stay that long though because the staffers were arguing about scheduling half the time I was there and the indoor space is rather cavernous: the place was originally a full-blown supermarket. Because Beaver Street and Lumberyard have the same owner, this microbrewery makes all of the same beers, but while Lumberyard distributes its products across the state, Beaver Street brews all of its suds for in-house consumption. Brewer Steve Hendricks comes from a culinary background and loves to experiment with flavors, whether it’s a sweet pecan pale ale or a spicy poblano pepper firkin. WTF is a firkin, you ask?

Although the trailhead is further from town than others on this list of Flagstaff craft beer and trail pairings, this hike is so worth the 40-minute drive. You’ll get a taste of what it’s like to walk inside a gigantic volcanic cinder cone – inactive, of course. The 1.5-mile hike takes you through the open terrain of pinon and juniper (think ‘no shade’) to a natural, red rock amphitheater.

It was opened by the same people who had previously opened Beaver Street Brewery, Winnie and Evan Hanseth, and there’s some overlap in the operations — some of Beaver Street’s beers are actually brewed at Lumberyard. One of Lumberyard’s own staples is Hazy Angel, an IPA named for the Bright Angel hiking trail down into the Grand Canyon, which is a 90-minute drive from Flagstaff.

The Beaver Street Brewery is one the best places to get beer in the Flagstaff area and features delicious food and a friendly atmosphere. If a cocktail lounge is more appealing than a brewery, the Monta Vista Cocktail Lounge is the place to be in Flagstaff. The crowd is typically 25 and over, and live music is often played within the Monta Vista's confines.

This spot has been around since 1994 and pumps out brews like the Railhead Red, R&R Oatmeal Stout, and Red Rock Raspberry. I popped my head in for a beer and wished I had tried one of their wood-fired pizzas — next time I won’t make this mistake. Nimarco's and Macy's is right next to Beaver St. Brewery which has good food also, but I don't think they have outdoor seating for four-legged reporters.
