Fairbanks is famous for its number of Thai restaurants, and many locals consider downtown's Thai House the city's best. The food itself is complex, flavorful, and exceedingly fresh. Ginger fans may want to head straight for the Ginger Lover, an aptly named dish with warm, robust aromas.

I’ll be honest, I was completely surprised to discover that Fairbanks has a number of great Asian restaurants – especially Thai restaurants. This is primarily due to the relatively larger number of Thai immigrants who’ve decided to settle in this unique part of Alaska and brought their deeply warming recipes to help chase away the winter chill. During my February 2020 visit to Fairbanks, I was taken by a local guide to Thai House and was definitely happy with the bowl of piping hot chicken soup.

He opened Thai House back in 1989, the first permanent establish in Fairbanks to serve his native cuisine. Initially arriving here to work at a local gold mine, he eventually saved enough to start a restaurant he could call his own, over the frequent protests of his wife, Laong. She emigrated to the town several years later, helping run the kitchen and outfitting the interior with the many Buddhist-themed murals and statues which still define the decor today.

Potato-chip-sized snowflakes fell from the sky as our server delivered two bowls of steaming Tom Yum at the Thai House on my winter visit to Fairbanks. One taste of the lemongrass-laden hot and sour soup, and I felt transported back to the streets of Bangkok, where I spent three months in the late 90s. The Tom Yum at Thai House was as good as any I had enjoyed in the capital city of Thailand.

For dinner we hit up a little Thai food spot called Thai House Restaurant and we were totally surprised at the authentic flavors and spice!. Turns out there are a ton of Thai food restaurants in this town so I guess they have to deliver top quality food to keep ahead of the competition.

The best over-all Thai restaurant is the Thai House, but we tend to find ourselves at the Lemon Grass since we live on Chena Ridge.
