When you’re pulling up to a less-than-enticing building on the side of a highway, you might feel like you’re made the wrong choice with Foster’s Market. However, as soon as you step inside, you’ll be convinced. The front part of the restaurant is more like a general store, with all sorts of goodies from local and nearby producers.

Early on, he noted in a phone call to California that Chapel Hill could be ‘it’, based on his visit to Foster’s Market there. “It’s a really ‘Nancie’ kind of place”, he told me, meaning that they had great coffee, fantastic food, and tables where you could sit and read or do some work. He was right, and I have since been found often, mostly at the Chaple Hill location, for PTA committee meetings, deadline-frenzied writing sessions, salad-plate suppers, wood fired pizzas, CHOP NC planning sessions, cakes and pies of magnificent deliciousness, candy-purchasing for Christmas stockings (shhhhh, don’t tell), Foster’s 7 Pepper Jelly restocking, newspaper browsing, and big chunky mugs of coffee.

Head over for breakfast or lunch and enjoy a salad, soup, sandwich, or one of their many baked goods (perhaps a slice of their indulgent peanut butter pie) on the patio or lawn. On your way out, stop to peruse their selection of local gifts, including jams, coffee, toffee, cheese straws, grits and candy, along with cookbooks and kitchenware. Located right next to Biergarten, Foster’s Market is by far our favorite Southern brunch spot in Durham. They have endless outdoor seating (covered and uncovered) as well as plenty of indoor seating for those especially hot days. Walk in, and you’ll stare at the menu for a full twenty minutes trying to decide how many amazing desserts you can pair with your meal without feeling embarrassed.

One of our absolute favorite places to find healthy food in Durham, Foster’s Market is an old standby. Go at lunchtime and you can choose a sandwich off their menu, or opt for a plate of three ready-made salads and sides. These change regularly, but they often have things like sweet potato fries, Greek salad, and grain salads with toppings like goat cheese and dried fruit.

The beloved Foster’s Market is one of the most visited breakfast spots in the city for its homey vibes and comfort food.
