What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Bookcase and Barber is lauded for its unique speakeasy concept, creative literary-themed cocktails, and intimate, dimly lit atmosphere. While many praise the expertly crafted drinks and cool vibe, some reviews mention slow service and inconsistent drink portion sizes. Despite minor service hiccups, the overall experience is considered a must-visit for its novelty and quality.
"Where to start - super cool place. Look up the password before arriving. We went during the evening and enjoyed some time to ourselves before the after dinner crowd arrived. Our bartender Enrique made our night - so glad we moved to the bar. The drinks were some of the most creative cocktails I’ve had. I had the cabbage patch kid (with cilantro and cabbage) and a caprese Martini (maybe 2). Husband had the Sam Elliot, which is a bourbon cocktail and an old-fashioned. This was definitely our favorite bar during our trip and we will be back."

"Neat speakeasy within a barbershop. Not exactly "secret" when the passcode is on the website, but still fun for sure. Our drinks were all solid and I enjoyed the whiskey options. It was incredibly dark inside when we went so I wouldn't recommend it for larger groups but honestly I wouldn't recommend any speakeasy experience for more than 4 people. Check it out!"
Jeremy Yowell
"Love this place. It’s dark and cozy and intimate. Craft cocktails. If you want quiet, and away from her Main Street crowd then this is for you. I was told it gets. Say before dinner at 5-6 and after - like around 7-7:30."

Nightlife in Durango
There's more to this traditional working barbershop than meets the eye. Drop the right password (hint: it's subtly displayed on the website), and you'll be ushered through the bookcase into a Gatsby-worthy speakeasy. Sure, it's a bit gimmicky, but the excellence of the ever-changing house-original cocktails and small plates more than makes up for it.
Durango, Colorado: A Romantic Getaway in the Old Wild West
Named a “living museum", the Strater was built in 1887 and is the oldest hotel in Durango. When you walk in, you immediately notice the classic wild west vibe that’s been beautifully preserved. Gold patterned wallpaper, bronze hand railings, vintage chandeliers, and gorgeous winding hallways with original artifacts hanging on the walls are just a few aspects of the Strater’s charm. The best part of the Strater is you know that your room is 100% unique. Each of the 93 historic rooms is furnished with authentic, vintage furniture with each room having its own special characteristics. I recommend room 321 but I also hear room 226 has a fantastic view. Whichever room you choose, the rich history, chivalrous staff, and beautiful layout will make you feel like you just walked into the 1880s as the guest of honor.

Usually when someone tells you that a business is “the best-kept secret in town”, they mean it metaphorically. This is not the case with The Bookcase & Barber, a full-service barber and a swanky speak-easy tucked away inside an unassuming bookcase. As a former bookstore, they pay homage to their literary roots by featuring a slew of cocktails fashioned after the favored recipes of famous authors.
