The original Checker Bar on Farmer), the Sheik, the still-existing Laikon, the Mayfield Chop House, Jacoby's, the old Bagel Deli on Woodward, and for that fancy night out, the Pontchartrain Wine Cellars, were some of my family's favorites. Farther out from downtown, the place we ate most often when they took us kids out to eat which didn't happen a lot) was the Golden Dragon, both in the 'old' Third) Chinatown, and the 'new' Cass) Chinatown.

First opened in 1954, the Checker Bar is a neighborhood bar and burger joint that has withstood the test of time. Harry Monroe, who originally owned the establishment, was in his 90s when he sold it to David Gregory and Timothy Tharp in 2014, on the condition that they preserve its name and atmosphere. Tharp and Gregory kept their word and the Checker remains an integral part of the city's nightlife, with a kitchen open until 2 a.m.

After a long night of bar-hopping, dancing, frolicking, and carousing, sometimes you just want a beer, a shot, and a burger. Checker Bar fits that bill, with downtown’s latest-serving kitchen and a well-stocked bar with local and international beers on tap. It’s that familiar, cozy bar you can find in every decent-sized town, with tin ceilings, random items plastered to the walls and an eclectic crowd of late-night revelers.

An absolute Detroit classic and a spot that won’t break the bank either. Well known for their fresh patty burgers & fries, $2 ready to go pizza slices upstairs, but probably even more so among our crew is their $2 Shorts beers, you can’t go wrong w/ Checker Bar. Plus, if you want to see your HandleBar driver after tours it’s highly likely we’re upstairs at the arcade eating pizza to a few rounds of Strohs or Shorts.

Beer, cocktails, classic burgers and bar food served up in a laid-back space with vintage arcade games are the order of the day at this quirky Detroit foodie haunt. While the food takes centre stage, there’s no denying that the arcade on the second floor is also a major draw. If you’re looking for a menu tip-off, try their delicious-sounding deviled eggs “4 Ways”, served with jalapeño, BLT, and lobster.

Checker Bar features a renovated space on its second floor that’s a throwback to the 80s and features a ton of amazing games that the little ones will enjoy. But they’ll also love the mouthwatering pizzas on offer such as Cheezus, Spicy Pep Pep, and Napalm Breath.

A modern take on the classic diner, Checker Bar offers a vintage atmosphere along with classic American stables and a cocktail menu. This is a great place to dine at if you’re looking for that diner feel, but with a twist!. Checker Bar also features a variety of classic arcade games, vintage signage, and a fun, inviting atmosphere!

Checker Bar: If you're in the Campus Martius area and you want more of a Midwest dive rather than an upscale cocktail lounge, Checker Bar is your sanctuary. It's also a useful option for those looking for a bar to hang out at during off-peak hours, because this place is open daily and early. Happy hour is weekdays 3-6 p.m.

If you're in the mood for pizza in a livelier setting, Checker Bar is a good pick. The restaurant and bar have an arcade upstairs with some old-school games and pinball machines that are the perfect way to kill some time while you wait for your food. I once played a gig in Detroit with a very large pickup band. It was for the food handlers or something like that. Strangely, the Musician Guild called and told me they needed a white drummer to balance things out as per black and tan.

Robby Rob hosts karaoke 4 or 5 nights a week at bars in the city. He’s a great host and his sound system is pretty good. Checker bar, 3rd street are two fun spots.
