Midtown Nationally renowned spot for the eponymous green liqueurChartreuse isn't named for the color of its walls, though they are indeed quite green. This Midtown restaurant -- and yes, we're breaking our own rules by including it here, but for good reason -- is named for the once-extremely-esoteric herbal liqueur made by monks in the French Alps from a close-guarded secret recipe of 130 herbs. The craft cocktail movement re-popularized this boutique spirit, and Chartreuse, the restaurant, is one of the top-selling establishments in the country for sales of the green (and yellow!) liqueur.

With bright green walls covered in succulents and dried flowers, Chartreuse is about as close to spring as you can get during Detroit’s long winter. The seasonal menu always includes a few pastas and shareable entrees, along with some vegetarian small plates that will make you think, “If vegetables always tasted like this, I’d probably eat more vegetables.” If you don’t want to sit down for a whole meal, there’s also a cocktail bar in the front where you can just order snacks and drinks and remind yourself that the world isn’t always a cold, dark place. Chartreuse is a seasonal New American restaurant opened in 2015 by Chef Doug Hewitt and business partner Sandy Levine, located next door to the Detroit Institute of Arts within the historic Park Shelton building. The restaurant has earned the prestigious Restaurant of the Year award from the Detroit Free Press and is known for its dedication to the Detroit community, most notably in the form of its use of local artist works in its unique botanical decor and its sourcing of ingredients from local farms and producers. Lunch and dinner menus change frequently, but often focus on well-prepared seasonal meat and seafood dishes paired with vegetables.

Maybe it’s the living green wall surrounded by bright splashes of green and Ouizi’s flower mural greeting you from the vestibule as soon as you enter, or the dried flowers fixed to bright netting acting as a gentle space divider, but simply walking into Chartreuse lifts my spirits. The service here is impeccable, the drinks are artfully crafted, and the food is nuanced and exciting. The best way I can describe this favorite restaurant of mine is ‘heartwarming.’ The most impressive thing about Chartreuse to me is the caliber of food they are creating in the tiny kitchen space they have.

In name alone, Chartreuse is an homage to The Emerald Room, one of the original restaurants at the landmark Park Shelton building. In practicality, this modern farm-to-table restaurant named itself for focus on bright, seasonal ingredients that make up it's menu. The surprisingly concise menu covers a lot of geographic terrain (panang curry short ribs, potato sausage with spaetzle, and masa tots with smoked poblano salsa).

Located in downtown Detroit, this award-winning restaurant sources its food from local farms with amazing results. The creative menu changes frequently, based on the availability of locally-sourced ingredients, and standout offerings include Grilled Quail with wild rice, ran berry, apple, pomegranate, delicate squash, kale, and cider honey. This is one of my favorite farm to table spots in Detroit.

The namesake liqueur may get top billing at Chartreuse Kitchen & Cocktails, but you’ll also find plenty of organic and biodynamic wines from around the world plus offerings from Detroit-area distilleries. At Evening Bar in the boutique, faux-vintage Shinola Hotel, staff whip up sexy cocktails, pour American wines and serve small plates made by Andrew Carmellini.
