Insider Tips

Chartreuse in Detroit is one of those places where you can really taste the season. The menu changes often depending on what local farmers and producers have available, and you can tell they actually care about where their ingredients come from. It’s thoughtful food and such a good spot if you’re into places that support small farms and let the ingredients shine. • #detroiteats #farmtotable #local...

The kind of dish that makes Sunday feel special. Try our seasonal Capunsei Gnocchi. Handmade gnocchi tangled in marinara, grilled eggplant, and fennel. Shaved Locatelli and crispy garlic seal the deal.

Reviews Summary

Chartreuse Kitchen & Cocktails is praised for its exceptional, creative, and seasonal American cuisine, as well as its attentive and friendly service. Diners particularly enjoy the rustic ambiance and the unique experience of trying Chartreuse liqueur. However, some reviewers note that small plate portions can lead to higher costs and occasional issues with excessive saltiness in certain dishes.

"Chartreuse is one of, if not our FAVORITE, places to bring people when they come into town. Their food is exceptional and their service is top notch. We adore the constant rotation of menu items and the brilliance behind each creative item crafted on the menu. From start to finish, this is one of the BEST restaurants in the city - no question."

Michael Fortier

"We enjoyed every sip and bite of our meal, from start to finish. Staff was friendly, accommodating, and well versed in the menu. Rustic, French farm table ambiance where they use the freshest local ingredients to present an often changing menu. They suggest 3-5 plates to share and enjoy the flavors of the season.
We had crab cakes, duck, wild boar, and gnudi before finishing with the vanilla pudding and vanilla cake. Of course, we had to try their namesake chartreuse and compared the green vs. the yellow."

Karen Puroll

"We recently celebrated our 30th anniversary here and the staff went over the top. A personalized menu and hand written card! Our server Jody was incredible, the food was delicious! The whole experience was perfect! Thank you for making our special day that much better!"

Best Bars in Detroit: Cool New Places to Drink & Our All-Time Favorites

Midtown Nationally renowned spot for the eponymous green liqueurChartreuse isn't named for the color of its walls, though they are indeed quite green. This Midtown restaurant -- and yes, we're breaking our own rules by including it here, but for good reason -- is named for the once-extremely-esoteric herbal liqueur made by monks in the French Alps from a close-guarded secret recipe of 130 herbs. The craft cocktail movement re-popularized this boutique spirit, and Chartreuse, the restaurant, is one of the top-selling establishments in the country for sales of the green (and yellow!) liqueur.

With bright green walls covered in succulents and dried flowers, Chartreuse is about as close to spring as you can get during Detroit’s long winter. The seasonal menu always includes a few pastas and shareable entrees, along with some vegetarian small plates that will make you think, “If vegetables always tasted like this, I’d probably eat more vegetables.” If you don’t want to sit down for a whole meal, there’s also a cocktail bar in the front where you can just order snacks and drinks and remind yourself that the world isn’t always a cold, dark place. Maybe it’s the living green wall surrounded by bright splashes of green and Ouizi’s flower mural greeting you from the vestibule as soon as you enter, or the dried flowers fixed to bright netting acting as a gentle space divider, but simply walking into Chartreuse lifts my spirits. The service here is impeccable, the drinks are artfully crafted, and the food is nuanced and exciting. The best way I can describe this favorite restaurant of mine is ‘heartwarming.’ The most impressive thing about Chartreuse to me is the caliber of food they are creating in the tiny kitchen space they have.

13 Best Restaurants In Metro Detroit

In name alone, Chartreuse is an homage to The Emerald Room, one of the original restaurants at the landmark Park Shelton building. In practicality, this modern farm-to-table restaurant named itself for focus on bright, seasonal ingredients that make up it's menu. The surprisingly concise menu covers a lot of geographic terrain (panang curry short ribs, potato sausage with spaetzle, and masa tots with smoked poblano salsa).
