Reviews Summary

Diners praise American Coney Island for its authentic Detroit Coney dogs, fast service, and a taste of history. While some note its proximity to its famous rival, Lafayette, many find its bright atmosphere and delicious, classic hot dogs to be a satisfying experience. Service is consistently highlighted as friendly and efficient, making it a great stop for a quick, iconic meal.

"Having loved chili dogs since I was a kid, this was on my list of places to try. Did not disappoint. The Coney Island dog was delicious. The hot dog is all beef, good crunchy casing and was awesome. The chili sauce is great and had a good coverage of onions. I also had the chili cheese fries. The fries were perfectly golden. Red offers great service and entertainment as he calls out the orders to the cook."

Sean King

"Another must-see place in Detroit. The service was fast... Just minutes. The hot dogs were fresh and hot. Our server Red was great and very friendly and welcoming. The restaurant was clean and well maintained."

Ron Sims

"I'm a fan of a good chili dog. I try to stubble across one about one a week. But if I lived this close tk a dog this good, I'd be big as a house. The dog had a little snap to it on the bite. The chilli was tasty and the cheese was real cheddar. Fries came out hot and fresh. Love the service, but it was a little awkward when you walk in. Is it counter service? No it's table service but it's not clear if you don't frequent this joint. Still the best dog I had while in Detroit... Would definitely return."

The 27 Best Places To Eat & Drink In Detroit - Detroit

American Coney Island is located directly next door to Lafayette and is actually the original of the two, while Lafayette is the result of a family fight. The two are pretty similar, with American being the more updated, 24 hour option (Lafayette closes at 3am). Consider trying coneys from both before deciding where your allegiance lies, but never trust a Detroiter who doesn’t have a preference.

A History of Detroit in 10 Dishes

American Coney Island is Detroit’s classic tourist destination, brightly decorated in red, white and blue, where friendly, efficient servers can often be seen bringing the spot’s signature dish by the armful to tables full of locals and out-of-towners alike. The downtown restaurant has been around since 1917, opened by Gust Keros, who started off selling chili-covered hot dogs just outside its current location. His brother, Bill, immigrated to the United States shortly after the opening and started his own restaurant, Lafayette Coney Island, next door, using a different recipe for the chili sauce.

In Search of the Best Detroit Coney Dogs

The first thing I noticed when I entered American Coney Island is that it didn’t have the vibe I expected from a century-old favorite diner. There’s no atmosphere, no dirty grunge, and nothing that gave it the feel of an all-hours institution (after all, a meal consisting of a hot dog and chili cheese fries seems like a better idea at 3am after a few drinks). Instead, American is a cute, family-friendly place somewhere between a fast food chain and a diner.
