Reviews Summary

Centro is lauded for its vibrant atmosphere and delicious Italian-inspired cuisine, especially its coal-fired pizzas and handmade pastas. Diners frequently praise the attentive service and the unique ambiance of the historic Masonic Temple. However, some reviews mention inconsistent food quality, particularly with certain dishes, and one reviewer noted an issue with a surcharge for credit card payments.

"My experience at Centro Restaurant in downtown Des Moines was absolutely fantastic! This Italian-inspired gem, led by Chef George Formaro, delivers fresh, flavorful dishes in a lively yet upscale atmosphere. The coal-fired oven pizzas are a standout—perfectly crisp with high-quality toppings like Graziano sausage and fresh mozzarella. I also loved the cavatelli with sausage, which was perfectly balanced with herbs and a rich, spicy tomato sauce. The service was attentive, and the portions were generous, leaving us eager to return for more. Whether you're grabbing a drink and pizza or enjoying a multi-course meal, Centro is a must-visit for anyone in Des Moines"

James Robinson

"Just the fact that they charged us to pay by credit card, and then we had to pay higher tax because of that, makes me not want to go back, and I enjoyed the salad, but the pizza was disappointing. We started with the Caesar which was very good and I liked the anchovies. The pizza was a four cheese with tomato sauce. Horribly tasteless, I make better pizza at home, and my tomato sauce actually has flavour. This was just coloured red and the entire pizza just tasted of garlic. It was tasteless bread with the texture of cheese that tasted like chunks of crushed garlic. Then to top it off, I realised once home that they charged an additional $1.61 (2.75%) to pay via credit card, and then the tax we paid went from $4.10 to $4.22. If anything this charge should be after tax and not increase our bill. This is daylight robbery and a disgrace to hard working people. We live down the road and we would have gone back, but this is just unacceptable"

Lorien Spilkin

"Guys, the salad could’ve been great if we could actually taste the vegetables — instead, it was drowned in a sweet dressing. The meat was extremely poor quality; we couldn’t even eat the steak.

As for the service… it was disappointing. No one cleared the dirty plates, I didn’t even get a proper dinner plate and had to eat from a dessert plate. On top of that, the waitress brought all the food out at once and just stood there waiting while we scrambled to make room."

Is the Des Moines restaurant scene ready for national honors?

Derek Eidson at Centro has been experimenting with handmade pastas and cured meats. Monthly dinners he curates with Formaro bring specialty dishes and menus to a group of 50, almost like opening a completely different restaurant within the Italian eatery, Formaro said. For now, though, Des Moines might want to concentrate on some of the pieces Zimmern says need to be in place before earning national recognition for the dining scene.“I think it needs a traditional restaurant culture more than one generation old, which for restaurants is 10 to 15 years,” Zimmern said. “It needs a dining populace willing to be experimented at.

One of the first restaurants I fell in love with when I moved to Des Moines, Centro will always be a top contender. Being a downtown Des Moines staple, they serve up Italian food, specializing in their pizza/salad combos and homemade breads from the connected lunch spot – South Union. A perfect blend of modern finishes, vintage décor and original floor tile greets you with an aroma of garlic and red wine, followed by a waiter dressed in traditional white shirt, black tie garb and the clicking of utensils & chatter echo across the high ceiling.
