What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Gem Steakhouse & Saloon offers a historic dining experience with highly praised steaks, often cooked to perfection. While many customers rave about the food and attentive service, a few have encountered issues with rude staff and poor food quality. The restaurant's connection to "Deadwood" characters and its atmosphere are notable draws.
"Excellent food in a nice quiet environment with comfortable seating. Very interesting how it is located in the place of the original Gem from the 1800s. If you're a fan of the HBO Deadwood series then take note the restaurant seems to honor another HBO series - Chernobyl, because that's how hot their horseradish is!. Far better than any horseradish I've ever eaten."

"Not going to recommend this place to anyone. Chicken fried steak (or blackened?) was definatly cooked in old grease or overcooked.. Had to ask twice for a refill of ice tea and empty water glasses. Not busy and plenty of staff so not sure what the issue is (not a new server or new cook)? If reply is given don't want to hear we'll do better next time. Quality and integrity. Apologies for the rant but on vacation and dislike the lack customer service."

"Stayed at the Mineral Palace. Came up a floor for breakfast sandwiches as we prepared for the day. Portions were huge and the atmosphere was very relaxed. The menu looked great but we were just having breakfast."

If you watched “Deadwood” or are eagerly anticipating the long-awaited conclusory “Deadwood” movie (for which Olyphant and McShane reprise their roles, and which, like the show, was shot on a ranch in California) that premieres on the cable network on May 31, you may be relieved to learn that Swearengen’s volatile establishment, the Gem, is long gone, though its name now adorns a much newer one, part of a hotel whose entire first floor is a casino. The restaurant on the second floor offers a rather civilized breakfast, complete with a serviceable hollandaise sauce.
