Reviews Summary

Villa Tronco is celebrated for its warm, historic ambiance and generous portions of classic Italian dishes. Diners rave about the friendly service and delicious desserts, particularly the famous cheesecake and Amaretto Bread Pudding. While most find the food authentic and satisfying, a few reviews mention dated preparation or a desire for more elevated flavors.

"Villa Tronco is an amazing Italian restaurant located in the heart of downtown Columbia. The atmosphere makes you feel at home inside, especially the accommodating staff. I started with the fried mozzarella, very good with a nice sauce to match. The Chicken Marsala entree was delicious on top of a hefty portion of linguine. Don’t forget to try their famous cheesecake for dessert."

Daniel Sean

"Old School Red Sauce Italian. Was surprised how good the food was coming from someone who has great choices from the Boston area. Big Portions, Quality ingredients and Great Staff. Can’t beat the prices either…
Will definitely eat here again if I ever make it back to town. Wednesday night needs a reservation so you know - we were able to eat at the bar and tables were filling up every minute - Definitely Recommend…"

Pete Man

"I ate here for the first time today and fell in love with the classic look and feel. The owner was very polite and friendly, the Chicken Marsala was good, but it was the desserts that were absolutely amazing. The Amaretto Bread Pudding was a MUST HAVE, and the cannoli’s were AMAZING. Definitely a must try next time you’re in town."

Best BBQ, burgers, delis and restaurants in Columbia, SC

Villa Tronco is not only the oldest restaurant in Columbia, but it’s also one of the oldest in the state, perhaps second only to Henry’s in Charleston (both claim to be the oldest). Opened in 1940 as a fruit store, the restaurant grew into a hub for Italian food during World War II as Fort Jackson soldiers passed through the town. Owner Sadie Tronco was born to Sicilian immigrants, so homesick soldiers of Italian descent turned to her cooking know-how for spaghetti and meatballs.

While you wait for this delicious main, get the flavor party started with an order of the Calamari or Italian Eggrolls.

Best Italian Restaurants in Columbia SC

Pizza lovers, you may thank Villa Tronco for introducing the Italian pie to Columbia some 75 years ago. At the time, Tronco servers handed out free slices on the street because few Americans had heard of the savory treat. Family owned for four generations, Villa Tronco opened and continues to operate in an historic firehouse constructed from chimney bricks of buildings destroyed in General W.T. Sherman’s notorious burning of Columbia.

In the restaurant biz, longevity is usually an indication of reliability. Villa Tronco has been around for 60+ years and continues to be popular – lunch is a little less busy, so if you're looking for a substantial midday meal this is a great choice. The crab cakes, drizzled with roasted red pepper sauce, are fantastic (for a light meal, try a crab cake atop a spinach salad).
