Reviews Summary

Diners rave about The War Mouth's authentic Southern cuisine, particularly the whole-hog barbecue and unique brunch items, complemented by a lively atmosphere and friendly service. While many praise the flavorful dishes and local ingredients, some reviews mention concerns about portion sizes and value for money, with specific dishes occasionally falling short of expectations.

"Great all-around little hole in the wall, fantastic service, great food, and really just an interesting place to eat. The atmosphere basically gave off a more redneck feeling, mounted animals, southern food, open air dining, and so much more. Well grilled juicy burgers, raw fries, even pork belly bits, not really much of a selection on the menu, but the foods they do have, it's taste well makes up for limited options. They even have desert."

"Me and a friend ate at this establishment for the first time. For the appetizer we tried the Shrimp Skewers which were spicy, but very delicious. For the entrée I had the Chicken Bog which was good. My friend had the Fried Catfish which was cooked to perfection, and very fresh! The service and atmosphere was awesome!"

Alex W

"Great food such a variety of items. Three of us had something different and all were delicious. Our server was very attentive and knew about the menu and made several recommendations.
The night we were there was trivia night and it was a very lively and loud crowd. We dined outside and avoided the noise."

Named after a type of sunfish in South Carolina, The War Mouth is one of the most creative restaurants in Columbia. Chef Harold Pendleton uses downhome Southern ingredients (think pig ears, cheese straws, and pickled okra) to create delicious plates with a gourmet flair. A French-Canadian by birth, Pendelton has lived in South Carolina for most of his life, and his menu blends elements of both celebrated culinary traditions.

Chef Rhett Elliott told me that his favorite hashes growing up were from Sweatman’s in Holly Hill and Ward’s in Sumter. I myself grew up eating Ward’s hash, so that might explain some of my affinity for The War Mouth’s hash, but their approach is much bigger and bolder than what I grew up with and is all the better for it. Using more mustard than most in the sauce makes for a tangy burst of flavor with every bite.
