Reviews Summary

Skyline Chili is celebrated for its unique Cincinnati-style chili, often described as a must-try regional specialty. Diners praise the fast service, affordable prices, and the iconic 3-Way dish. While the chili's distinct flavor profile is a hit for many, it can be an acquired taste for some.

"My friends and I tried Skyline Chili today for the first time and went to this location for a late dinner. There was a dedicated parking lot for Skyline customers with free 1 hour parking.
We were served immediately, our food came out very quickly, and had a great time! I had a small 3 way, it was very good. No complaints at all other than the pretty harsh fluorescent lighting, but it just added to the “cafe” atmosphere."

Hannah Bailey

"The Chili is definitely different. I could taste the clove in the sauce. The atmosphere was very nice . The young lady gave me a Lil sample to try. It's an acquired taste but I wanted to see what the hype was with chili and spaghetti mixed. Here visiting my sister for our mother's birthday. As far as recommendations I'd say of you are food come try the Chilli dogs at least and the chili. Guess I'm just a southern girl at heart . We appreciate the hospitality. 😊♥️"

Zarra

"Had the regular sized 3-way chili and 1 cheese coney at this location. I don’t know what they put in here but I couldn’t stop eating it was so good!! And the best part was I had to double and triple check the menu to see that I was ordering the main thing here because it was so cheap!"

10 Best Restaurants in Cincinnati for Delicious Eats

The history of Cincinnati chili—seasoned with a distinct mix of spices, like cinnamon and cumin—began with a Greek immigrant, Nicholas Lambrinides, who named his restaurant after Cincy’s skyline. Skyline Chili locations throughout the region serve this filling, affordable regional favorite. It goes without saying that no visit to The Queen City would be complete without Cincinnati chili.

Where to eat in Cincinnati, Ohio

At a nearby branch of Skyline Chili, one of many in the city, I tuck into Cincinnati’s best-known dish. Characterised by a thin sauce with hints of cinnamon and clove, this local version of chilli is far milder than the jalapeño-laced Tex-Mex iteration. “We’re celebrating our 75th anniversary this year,” says Skyline Chili’s Sarah Sicking.

Skyline Chili named best regional fast food restaurant in nation

Cincinnati's signature dish has once again been determined to be among the best in the nation. In a list of the best fast food restaurants in the United States from USA TODAY's 10Best, Skyline Chili was named the Best Regional Fast Food chain."While you'll certainly find its namesake on the menu," the 10Best staff says, "They also serve hot dogs, salads, wraps, burritos, and chili bowls."They even have a few vegetarian-specific menu items," they add, just in case there are any non-meat readers still on the fence. This summer, Skyline added to their menu, bringing a daily breakfast menu to five restaurants across Greater Cincinnati. In coming in the top spot this year, Skyline beat out establishments such as Whataburger and In-N-Out Burger. After coming in fourth place in the rankings in 2021, Skyline was omitted from the 2022 list and was ranked No. 3 last year. This year's list marks the first time Skyline has topped the rankings. To see the full list of top 10 best regional fast food restaurants, click here. When it comes to the list as whole, Skyline is a bit of an outlier: Half of the top 10 are burger joints, including Schoop's Hamburgers, based in northwestern Indiana and suburbs of southern Chicago (No. 10).Another semi-regional restaurant made the list: Nashville-based Hattie B's Hot Chicken came in at No. 6 this year. Previous years have seen Hattie B's as high as No. 4 (2023) and as low as No. 9 (2022).Established Oct. 8, 1949, the first Skyline restaurant was located in Price Hill on Cincinnati's west side. The diner was located at the intersection of what is now Quebec Road and Glenway Avenue and named Skyline after the diner's panoramic views of downtown.Founder Nicholas Lambrinides was born in Kastoria, Greece, and emigrated to the United States in 1912. He brought his family recipes with him.As a child, Lambrinides watched and learned as his mother prepared her unique blend of flavors — it's that magical blend that eventually led Lambrinides to his secret recipe for Skyline Chili.Lambrinides worked at Empress Chili — the first largely successful chain serving Cincinnati chili — and later opened his own store in 1949.The rest is history, as Skyline expanded across the area, now with dozens of restaurants across Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana and Florida.

Cincinnati-Based Restaurant Chains That Are Actually Good

Skyline Chili 3-Way Multiple Locations The history of Cincinnati-style chili goes back to the 1920s, when it was invented by Greek immigrants who used Mediterranean-inspired spices to create a meat sauce used initially to top hot dogs sold out of a cart. The beef-based sauce — it’s kind of like a runny pasta sauce with hints of cinnamon, chocolate and other spices — eventually became the key ingredient in the 3-way, a plate of pasta topped with chili, an unnecessary amount of shredded cheddar cheese and a side of oyster crackers. Adding onions to the 3-way makes it a 4-way; onions and beans make a 5-way.

The Ultimate Guide To Cincinnati's Restaurants

Skyline Chili may not have been the inventor of Cincinnati chili, but it certainly helped put the city on the map in the chili world when it opened its first store in 1949 (via WVXU). Located on Price Hill, the first Skyline Chili offered incredible views of the downtown skyline, which gave founder Nicholas Lambrinides the inspiration for its name (via Skyline Chili). The company now operates more than 150 locations throughout Ohio, Kentucky, Florida, and Indiana.

Where to Eat in Downtown Cincinnati

Skyline Chili – Love it or hate it, “Cincinnati style” chili is the most well-known regional dish we have to offer. This polarizing style of chili features a meat sauce with hints of cinnamon and cocoa laid over either a bed of spaghetti or hotdog and covered with mounds of shredded cheese. More than anything else on this list, this is a risky recommendation as many who try out our special brand of chili leave either loving or despising it.

What Are Skyline Chili and Cincinnati Chili?

Skyline Chili is a perfect food and I will tolerate no slander of it. We can agree that sauce-like clove-nutmeg-cinnamon-and-god-knows-what-else-infused Cincinnati chili bears little resemblance to the bean-studded or beef-chunked stews that other regions of this great land might recognize as chili. But that's no justification for the torrent of bile Cincinnati chili receives from those unaccustomed to its pleasures.
