What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Portillo's offers a lively dining experience with a retro vibe and friendly staff, though food quality can be inconsistent. While many praise the iconic Chicago-style hot dogs and Italian beef, some reviews mention issues with order accuracy and food temperature. The atmosphere is a definite draw, making it a popular spot for both locals and tourists seeking a taste of Chicago.
"I have been waiting to try Portillo's for 3 years. I'm so happy I finally got to try them. Now, if you have texture issues, I would recommend not getting every single topping on the hot dog. Maybe get them on the side and try it as you go. All together the flavors are great! But can be overwhelming on the classic hot dog. Great flavors all around. Not too expensive. The place the spacious. Plenty of dine-in space. Had great parking (Their own dedicated parking lot) and even has a drive thru if you're not interested in dine-in or pick up inside. Will definitely return to try their cake shakes I have heard people rave about."

"At Portillo‘s early in the morning, it opens at 6:30. The hashbrowns is twice the amount that you get at Wendy’s for breakfast. I got the sausage and eggs. It is a messy sandwich to pick up. The sandwich is about 3 inches maybe and the sausage takes up most of the bread so the eggs are precariously put on top of the sausage. My sausage had a nice snap to it and a nice little char That I myself particularly like. The coffee is doing its job as a caffeine deliverer. With no additional add-ons good for under nine dollars that’s including tax. The only improvement I could think of I would love to have an Italian beef breakfast sandwich in their breakfast meal combos. Even though yes you could probably order it this early just to have but I want it to be a breakfast combo meal."

"Portillo’s definitely offers a unique and fun dining experience! The two-story setup with its café-style seating and art deco touches makes it feel lively and full of character. The staff was super friendly and upbeat, keeping the whole vibe light and enjoyable. Prices are reasonable, and it’s a great spot to soak in the atmosphere.
The food itself was okay—not bad, but not the standout part of the visit. My drink had way too much ice, which was a little disappointing. Also, a heads-up for anyone using the self-service kiosks: watch out when ordering a combo. It’s easy to accidentally add an extra fries order at the end—you won’t need the double portion!
Overall, I loved the experience more for the atmosphere than the food, and I’d still recommend stopping in for the fun, classic Portillo’s vibe."

The Best Cheap Eats In Chicago
It’s with good reason that Portillo’s has long been a cheap-eats staple in Chicago; the beloved Chicago-style hotdogs are no more than $4 and piled high with mustard, relish, celery salt, chopped onions, tomatoes, a kosher pickle and sport peppers. The rest of the fast-food-centric menu is just as wallet-friendly, peppered with the likes of a char-broiled chicken sandwich ($5.29), an Italian beef sandwich ($6.29), crinkle-cut fries ($2.69) and a chocolate cake shake ($4.29), which is actually blitzed with ice cream and a slice of chocolate cake.
36 Best Cheap Eats in Chicago That Are All $15 Or Less
The menu at Portillo's is long on expertly prepared fast-food staples, but the exemplary Chicago-style hot dog is an absolute must. Each sausage comes wrapped like precious cargo, but as you peel back the wax paper, you'll catch a glimpse of the bright-green relish, crimson tomatoes and sport peppers. The steamed poppy seed bun holds it all together like a warm hug, but you'll surely wind up with a bit of mustard on your chin.
Best Desserts in Chicago, Illinois
The impeccably moist chocolate cake at this Chicago-based hot dog joint is undeniably the chain’s most iconic dessert, but we’re willing to argue that its lesser-known frozen counterpart is actually even better. The creamy concoction features generous chunks of the signature cake blended into a masterfully spun milkshake, and is best teamed with a Chicago dog with all the proper trimmings.

Chicago Foods | 22 Famous Chicago Foods for 2025
You’d probably agree with us in saying that a true Chicago hot dog follows a very specific list of ingredients: a Vienna beef hot dog that’s water-bathed (not boiled), placed inside a steamed poppy seed bun with yellow mustard, fluorescent green relish and chopped white onions. It doesn’t end there, though, as spicy sport peppers, tomato slices, a dill pickle spear and a dash of celery salt are also crucial parts of this popular meal. Ketchup is strictly forbidden, of course.
