A once in a lifetime, bucket list experience. Alinea in Chicago lived up to the hype. A few of the culinary adventures on our menu: an archeological dig, a trip into the kitchen, a one bite Chicago “hot dog,” and the ultimate dessert performance art. #alinea #michelinstar #chicago

Reviews Summary

Alinea offers a truly unique and theatrical dining experience, with many guests praising its creativity, presentation, and sense of wonder. While some diners found the food to be a bit underwhelming in flavor compared to the spectacle, the overall experience is consistently described as unforgettable and a bucket-list worthy event. Service is generally lauded as attentive and personable, contributing to the magical atmosphere.

"Alinea is an extremely fun dining experience. The food is very delicious as well. The best dishes for me are the char, the South American fossil, and the Iberian pork. Of course the sundae is always iconic. Service is amazing and personable. I wish the wines by the glasses were a little better."

Squirrel Friend

"The team at Alinea really put on a fantastic show—it was one of the most joyful Michelin meals we’ve had. Every course had its own little secret, and the overall experience was full of surprises. That said, while the performance and creativity far exceeded our expectations, the food itself was a bit underwhelming in terms of flavor. The dishes tasted good, but I’d rate them at a lower-tier Michelin two-star level. Still, there were standouts: the salmon and the liquid-nitrogen-frozen ice cream at the end were both truly impressive, and easily the highlights of the night from a taste perspective."

Daxin

"I loved how creative the experience was. Every dish had a surprise in it, and there was this sense of magic throughout the meal.

However, the pursuit of creativity and magic resulted in some dishes lacking execution. Most dishes were served lukewarm when they should be hot. Some were aggressively seasoned. And this is a personal taste but there were licorice flavors in many of the dishes, which I did not like.

The service was good but not great. It took 10 minutes for them to give me a glass of sparkling water. It was a bit flat since they poured it out of an open bottle that had been sitting in a tub of ice near our table. And one of the servers poured regular water over it when I was halfway done with it.

Overall, it was a disappointing meal especially for a three Michelin restaurant. It’s certainly a unique experience but it was more like a magic show with mediocre food, rather than a great meal filled with magic."

Since that rave, Oriole has continued to flourish, with a tasting menu (now $285) that has only ripened with time and three times the space, which is still likely not enough room to accommodate all those waiting for one of Chicago’s toughest reservations. Chicago’s only three Michelin star restaurant, Alinea has been around almost 15 years and still books up months in advance. The brainchild of acclaimed chef Grant Achatz who became one of the best chefs in the world despite battling tongue cancer, that’s just one of their impressive feats. It was the first restaurant to pioneer the concept of prepaid ticketed reservations, pricing meals on a sliding scale based on date and time (Friday at 7 p.m. would be more expensive than Tuesday at 5 p.m.) in order to show that dining is an experience akin to the theatre.
