This fun, eclectic coffeehouse serves up homemade pastries along with their own roasted coffee, which you can even have ordered to your house. Beginning as a coffee cart and eventually expanding to having several established locations in the Charlottesville area, Mudhouse exemplifies how brewing up quality leads to success.

Co-Founders Lynelle and John Lawrence started their business with a little cart on Charlottesville's Downtown Mall and today, Mudhouse Coffee Roasters is a local roasting company with three coffeehouse locations. The flagship location on the Downtown Mall (213 W Main St) is open 7 days a week and exhibits the work of local artists, has cozy indoor/outdoor seating, and delicious baked goods. Mudhouse has a second location right across the street at the CODE building, as well as a third, just west of Charlottesville in Downtown Crozet (5793 The Square).

Shenandoah Joe Coffee is so popular that many of our favorite local coffee shops and grocery stores throughout Virginia carry their locally roasted beans, but in Charlottesville, you can visit the roaster in person to enjoy over 25 varieties of gourmet coffee from all over the world. Charlottesville is home to two Shenandoah Joe shops where you can get a freshly brewed cup or order beans to take home. Mudhouse has built its reputation by focusing on single-origin coffees and has medaled at the Golden Bean Competition. They foster direct trade relationships and have a Geisha coffee farm on Volcan Brau in Panama. Try the three local locations—one on the Downtown Mall, one in Crozet, and one within the CODE building.

Well known in Charlottesville and Crozet, Mudhouse is an educated coffee shop that offers some of the most well liked coffee in the city. Mudhouse too is its own roaster, working to ensure quality taste and finished products.

Mudhouse: the owners are friendly and donate coffee to my nonprofit org. The standard house roast is a little acidic for my taste, but they’ve got good options. Downtown mall location is nice, stocks good nosh, and open later than some other spots.

At the Mudhouse, locals relax with their laptop or a good book and enjoy coffee and pastries. Super fine espresso, gourmet juice bar, and free wireless internet make the Mudhouse a hotspot for students and locals alike.

Two young entrepreneurs, John & Lynelle, started off in 1993 pushing a moving coffee cart up and down the downtown mall. In 1995, they set up shop at the very end of the mall and developed a faithful & loyal clientele.

Mudhouse is totally proud of its certification as Q graders for the Coffee Quality Institute. The owners bring that quality to the beans roasted locally.
