According to the Dairy Market website, the history of the market dates back to the opening of the Monticello Ice Cream Company in 1912. In 1936 the company built the historic Monticello Dairy building which quickly became a place for social gatherings. The same building has been used by many local businesses over the years, and in 2017 Cunningham Quill Architects and Stony Point Development group purchased the building.

Until recently, they just had a location on the Corner, but in December they opened a new location at the new Dairy Market right on Grady Avenue. Next time you’re in Charlottesville, definitely add the Dairy Market to your list!. It’s such a cool food hall type place with stalls from some of my faves like Take It Away, Citizen Burger, and Moo Thru as well as a lot of new-to-me places.

Overall, the Market is made up of 18 merchants - 16 currently operational - and consisting of 13 food merchants, 1 brewery, 1 full-service restaurant, 1 full-service bar and 2 retail stalls. The space is tailored to promote Virginia farm-to-table restaurants while offering minority entrepreneurs a space of their own; of the vendors, 22% are women owned and 33% are minority owned.

The Dairy Market building also houses a 6,000-square-foot event space, called The Brick Cellar, in – wait for it – the lower level. Given Charlottesville is home to University of Virginia and is central to the rest of the commonwealth, it’s easy to envision The Brick Cellar in use for graduations, weddings, and reunions as well as business events.

Martin Horn is currently building food stalls for the Dairy Market coming soon to Preston Avenue. This establishment will be Charlottesville’s first market hall filled with delicious, food and drink from both local and world-famous merchants. This location used to be the Monticello Dairy building for the production of milk, butter, and cheese.

The Dairy Market Food and Beverage Hall opened in 2020 in the beautifully renovated historic Monticello Dairy Building. On our last visit, we enjoyed craft beer at Starr Hill Brewing and picked up small dishes from a few different stalls.

Inside you’ll find pizza, takeaway sandwiches, beer, ice cream, and more. I like the Maizal latin bowl spot, and my kids love Citizen Burger.

If you’re feeling subterranean, here’s a fabulous new entry into Charlottesville’s event space inventory. The Brick Cellar totals 6,000 square feet in 3 separate spaces. It can be reserved individually for cocktails or a meeting, or you can book it all for a grand blow-out.
