Pelican Brewing may be best known for its beer, but the Pacific City brewery also makes a tasty bowl of clam chowder. So delicious in fact, that it’s won multiple People’s Choice awards at Lincoln City’s Chowder Cook-Off. The soup isn’t too thick but isn’t runny either, and it’s chock full of herbs to give it a nice, earthy flavor.

Brew lovers can also sample Pelican Brewing’s rotating seasonal menu of food and beer. Every food (and dessert) item is listed with a recommended beer pairing, featuring 20 taps year-round with growler filling to-go.

Pelican Brewing is possibly the Oregon coasts most well-known brewery and has recently opened up a Cannon Beach location with full restaurant and pilot brewery. Pelican Brewing was founded in 1996 by Jeff Schons and Mary Jones in Pacific City, they have a production facility in Tillamook and now a 10bbl pilot brewery in Cannon Beach. This location doesn't have the view of the original Pacific City pub but it has the nicest space of any of them, right from the entry waiting room where you can select a bottle to-go or get your growler or crowler filled from taps at the hosting station.

Pelican Brewing is another brewery in Cannon Beach that you may come across because their menu lists quite a few gluten free options: flatbread pizzas, cheeseburger, steaks, and a root beer float. However, they do not take precautions against cross contact at this restaurant and that makes it a firm NO from me. I also noticed the menu here has “gluten reduced beer.” The current recommendation is that gluten-removed beer is not safe for celiacs, backed up by this study by the Gluten Intolerance Group and University of Chicago Celiac Research Center.

It wouldn't be a booze crawl on the coast without popping into Pelican Brewing (1371 S Hemlock St., 503-908-3377, pelicanbrewing.com/pubs/cannon-beach), and since it's only a block from the distillery, you don't have to make much of an effort to get there. With three locations along the coast, the brewpub here opened just months before Public Coast started operations three years ago. The sprawling blond-wood interior and vaulted ceiling are a sharp contrast to the cozy tasting room you just came from.

One of our last stops before preparing for dinner was the Cannon Beach Distillery, just a block away from Pelican Brewing’s local brewpub. This was a funky, fun space with some interesting variety of spirits including rums, agave spirits (similar to tequila), gins, whiskeys, and more. I got a sample of three spirits, and while at this juncture I don’t recall exactly what I ordered, I do know that one was the Xalapa Agave with jalapeno, which was quite interesting.

The sit-up bar is to the back of the establishment and is for over 21 only, children are allowed in the rest of the establishment. The sit-up bar seats 13 and is very modern.

This location offers an open-kitchen, pizza oven, vaulted ceilings, brewery, hand-painted murals, and a dog-friendly patio. Pelican generally does not stray too far from conventional beer styles, focusing on the classics, like IPAs (this is the Pacific Northwest, after all), stouts, and lagers. Located in the center of town in a handsome grey wood building, the pub offers a spacious indoor eating area with a modern industrial feel and an enormous colorful mural of iconic Haystack Rock above the open kitchen. And the outdoor seating area is perfect for a meal if you travel with pets.

Second stop was Pelican Brewing Company which in retrospect I realized I should have done last as it was closer to my hotel… but whatever, it’s beach time and there are no real rules. Warning: their beer flight is HUGE so prepare yourself!. Pelican itself is also a grand building with outdoor seating, craft pub fare and has a pretty decent happy hour menu.

Their Cannon Beach location is bright and airy, featuring a menu that showcases coastal fare, including beer-steamed clams, chowder, and fried halibut sandwiches. It’s a perfect stop for beer lovers and seafood fans alike.

Pelican Brewing - This place has only been open in Cannon Beach for three months, but it is an excellent place to eat. The pricing ranges anywhere from $10 a plate to $25 a plate and the kids meals are around $8, but the food is amazing and well worth the cost. We took the kids here for lunch when we arrived and were very impressed.

One of the top picks is the kid friendly Pelican Brewing, inside a stunning, architectural interior with exposed beams and vaulted ceilings. This is a huge space, with lots of patio seating during summer. Another great option is Public Coast Brewing, in a relaxed atmosphere at the far north end of Cannon Beach.

A sprawling restaurant amidst the quaint mom and pops of Cannon Beach, Pelican Brewing has a different feel to it entirely. The chowder, however, didn’t stand apart from the rest. Don’t get me wrong, it was a good chowder that I would definitely eat again, but was it the best clam chowder in Cannon Beach?

Pelican Brewing is one of those places just pulsing with activity. They’re located right at the main intersection as you enter Cannon Beach, and the open-air sides allow onlookers to get a glimpse of the raucous groups inside. Stop here for some tasters to unwind after a day of beaching or sightseeing.

I really wanted to try Pelican Brewing and Public Coast Brewing, but both were closed while I was there. I actually tried to go to Public Coast on a day when they were open, but I arrived at 7:30 (their website says they close at 8:00) and the doors were already locked.

Westport Winery’s Roberts family has again forged new ground, this time by announcing a second tasting room in Oregon. This new facet of their business will be called Westport Winery TASTING @ Cannon Beach. They signed the lease on their new location on May 25.

Service was great, most of the good was great, however the linguine wasn't great. Everyone was pretty satisfied overall though. They had gluten free options which was perfect for our group.
