Billy Club opened in Allentown toward the end of 2015 in a formerly boarded-up apartment building turned contemporary hideaway. From the start, owners Dan Hagen and Jake Strawser focused on cocktails, in part inspired by the speakeasy that operated out of the building during Prohibition. Drinks here are creative and delicious, made with top-notch spirits and local ingredients.

Raised in Wyoming County, Chef Nate Beardsley is what the industry calls self-taught, though he’d likely credit his tutelage to early influencers, from the chef he worked under in Wyoming County to the owner of Sophia’s, where, as a young cook, he learned about scratch cooking and hard work. Perhaps most influential are the several years he worked as a sous chef under chef Edward Forster, as well as the two years he spent living and working on a farm in Central New York. These two experiences are where he began to not just enjoy cooking, but to be inspired by it.

A small hotspot tucked in a central block of the popular Allen Street bar scene, Billy Club’s modern, minimalist décor, attention to detail and delicious cocktails will earn you bragging rights for booking and dining here. A tastefully spare menu offers small plates, with an emphasis, of course, on locally sourced and seasonal ingredients. Flat #12 mushrooms—grown locally and indoors—are always available and always delicious as a small plate, with “seasonal accompaniments.” From the menu, a vegan or vegetarian could put together a fine dinner.

Billy Club, tucked away on Allen, is a popular late night spot for cocktails, but in the daylight offers a wide array of classic brunch items like pancakes, omelettes, and steak and eggs, but with a refined, always-in-season twist. For something a bit on the lighter side, try their farm salad, with squash, manchego, pistachio, and roasted mushroom vinaigrette paired with a Roxbury cocktail made with Old Tom gin, Ambrato vermouth, pear, fennel, dandelion and burdock.

Billy Club: On my first night in town, I enjoyed Billy Club with a friend at 228 Allen St. This is a small neighborhood bar and restaurant that features an extensive cocktail menu and farm-to-table cuisine. I thought the halibut entree was excellent as was the seared duck breast. I highly recommend it.

Billy Club is hands down my favorite restaurant in Buffalo, and they have the best charcuterie board!. I love going for my birthday dinner every year. I also frequent the bar with girlfriends on Fridays after a long week at work, and Sundays for brunch!
