Long-time residents George, Mike and Greg met 25 years ago in Breckenridge. They set up the Canteen in 2014 with the aim of bringing comfort food, Colorado beer and funny stories to the table. Now it’s a cozy, wood-clad hangout, attracting those looking for a casual bite to eat.

Many of the restaurants we’ve listed here are on the high-end side, so if you’re looking for something more comfortable, laid-back, and casual, then you might want to stroll on into The Canteen. This tap house and tavern pride itself on its vast selection of Colorado craft beer, wine, and modern comfort food that will please any hungry adventurer. Some twenty-five years ago, the guys at the help of The Canteen (George, Mike and Greg) were scamming French fries at the on-mountain restaurants and trying to keep up with the hot chicks on skis. They also honed their grill skills as cooks in a wide range of Breck’s eateries. Make sure to thank them for channeling this expertise into a modern (read: thoughtfully prepared, not sloppy) burger that will keep you coming back for more.

The original log building, located near the center of the present structure, measures 20' square, and features hand-hewn squared whole log walls with square-notched corners. While the exterior of the building has been extensively remodeled and expanded over the years, obscuring the log home at the heart, the interior of the restaurant belies its early beginnings. The historic log structure is still visible in the bar area.

The Canteen has something for everyone, with awesome selection of wines, cocktails, and beers (all from breweries around Colorado, of course). And if you’re even more of a sharing mood with some close friends, their menu has delicious tapas and flatbreads that everyone will enjoy. Let me start by saying that The Canteen Tap House and Tavern exceeded my expectations in every way. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by the excellent service of Nate, who was not only knowledgeable about the menu, but also provided some great recommendations.
