Chasing Waterfalls in the Rain Today’s adventure took me deep into the heart of nature on a rainy day hike to Boulder River Falls. The rain-soaked forest was alive—moss clinging to every branch, ferns glistening like emeralds, and the scent of fresh earth in the air. The sound of the river, roaring with power from the rain-swollen currents, was both humbling and exhilarating. The trail was a bit s...

Reviews Summary

River and Woods is praised for its cozy ambiance and creative, community-sourced comfort food, often highlighted as a 'crown jewel' in Boulder. Diners love the unique menu items, friendly service, and the charming cottage setting with its backyard bar. However, some reviews mention inattentive service and issues with menu item availability, leading to disappointment.

"Wonderful restaurant, delicious food, and amazing team!
I organized a group dinner for 25 people and we couldn’t be happier with the experience! The family style dinner allowed us to stay within budget while giving us opportunity to try different appetizers, salad, 3 different main courses, and two desserts. Strongly recommended!"

"What a darling and inviting place this is! Every single staff member was kind and said hello and thanks for being here. Our server Andy was excellent - perfect timing, great suggestions and super friendly and welcoming. We came for Easter brunch and it was delicious. My husband loved the Brunch burger and I couldn’t resist the biscuits and gravy- so good! One of the highlights of the meal was starting with the Alpine Brunch Board sure to please any foodie. Such careful attention to detail… you can tell they take pride in what they do here! ❤️ Also recommend the Bloody Mary with the pepper vodka and the Paloma. The bartenders definitely know what they are doing."

"We consider this restaurant the “Crown Jewel” of Boulder and the Denver area. In two days, we tried everything on the menu and were consistently impressed by its taste and presentation. The only picture we took was of the deviled eggs. We devoured the food so quickly that pictures became an afterthought. The staff was pleasant, professional, and understood the restaurant’s mission. After 2 days we became friends and it felt like we knew them for 20 years. We truly hope our paths cross again! Hats off to Maddie, Gabby, Rob, and Nos (chef) - with all our adoration, Jennifer, Steve “The Grad,” and Matthew from Chicago!"

Where to Eat, Stay, and Play in Boulder, Colorado

For something a bit more casual (but equally delicious), get a table at one of chef Daniel Asher’s restaurants: Ash’kara for modern Israeli cuisine on Pearl Street or River and Woods for elevated comfort food in a historic miner’s cabin along Boulder Creek. A trip to Boulder also wouldn’t be complete without a trip to The Sink, a dive-y, landmark college bar on University Hill that serves up burgers and pizzas—President Obama even made a surprise appearance in 2012 before a speech at the university and ordered the Sinkza pizza (pepperoni, sausage, and pepper), which has since been renamed the POTUS pie.

More to the point, “Colorado comfort food,” as in, lamb-and-oat meatloaf, Rocky Mountain pan-fried trout ’n’ chips, and slow-braised Colorado short-rib with smoked cherry goat cheese smashed potatoes. Why go: These guys define creativity. To wit: They offer “community-sourced cuisine”—their interpretations of family-favorite recipes submitted online by the public. 3 new places to eat next time you head to Boulder

After four decades, Chef John retired, and the famed century-old miner’s cabin on the east end of downtown Pearl Street is under new management as River and Woods. Chef Daniel Asher (who Denverites know from Root Down, Linger and Ophelia’s) and Josh Dinar (co-owner of T/ACO, a co-founder of Boulder’s Restaurant Week and publisher of DiningOut Magazine) have created an atmosphere that is just as cozy as before, but with an outdoor backyard seating area in what used to be weeds and rubble, an outdoor grill and converted Airstream trailer-bar (tented and heated in the winter). The unique crowdsourced menu pays tribute to Chef John’s famous gnocchi verde, but the rest of the dishes were selected from the best family heirloom comfort-food recipes they could find, including Oysters Hickenlooper, Woodlands Montreal duck wings and a lamb and oat meatloaf.

The service was sweet and the place is nice, but the food is just OK. Much of it is too salty, and the veggies were overcooked. Also, the "GF" items in the menu are not all safe for celiac, as they don't have a dedicated fryer and some things you wouldn't expect go into it.
