Reviews Summary

Spoke Wine Bar is praised for its cozy, intimate atmosphere and exceptional wine list. Many highlight the creative and flavorful small plates, as well as the friendly and knowledgeable service. However, some diners find the prices to be high for the portion sizes, and the atmosphere can be quite loud, making conversation difficult.

"Spoke Wine Bar is an intimate gem with an impressive wine selection and creative small plates. The atmosphere is cozy yet refined, perfect for date nights. I especially loved their house-made pasta and thoughtful wine pairings. A must-visit if you’re around Davis Square!"

"Cozy ambiance pairs well with the warm service and creative food. I had a great meal tonight.

Raw scallops-
A dish full on texture. Fresh scallops came topped with bacon and figs. The figs added a subtle and sweetness that pair well with the scallops sweetness and added a nice chewy texture
The bacon added a nice smokiness and a nice crunch. Delicious!
5/5

Beef tartare-
This was slightly cooked. It still has the same texture of the bar beef and the dish being warm was great for Winter. The dish was tasty which came with brioche roll with some garlic butter. Tasty. 4/5

Venison
Very tasty and perfectly cooked. Very light gaminess. And came with a nice beef au jus sauce
4/5

Sweet potatoes
roasted white sweet potato chamomile, macadamia, pomegranate. Sweet and savory. This is like a pre dessert side
4.5/5

maple walnut tart
| sumac yogurt mousse, rye pie crust. This was good. Nothing stood out here, but it was enjoying.
3.5"

"$18 for a tiny side salad. $18 for the pictured TINY black bean tempeh. Full entree price point but not even enough to share. None of the flavor profiles of the 3 things we got were anything special. Overall average food at exorbitant prices. Friendly service and okay atmosphere - it’s super loud and hard to talk. I guess the intimate part refers to how close you have to lean in together to have a conversation."

The 26 Best Restaurants in Boston: June 2025

An intimate restaurant in Davis Square with a menu of small plates showcasing local and seasonal ingredients with simple yet inventive preparations. Why go: Co-chefs Paul Butler and Kelcey Rusch collaborate to create things we wouldn't even dream of, like savory sunchoke donuts dusted with powdered leeks; and griddled chickpea tempeh with maple-vinegar (think: vegan-friendly chicken tenders with honey mustard). We love: The diverse and thoughtful wine list and balanced and nuanced cocktails that complement the dining experience at Spoke.

The 10 Best Wine Bars In Boston

Spoke Wine Bar, located in Somerville’s Davis Square neighborhood, is a gem among the booze- and beer-focused joints in the area. It serves up New American dishes that showcase seasonal produce from local purveyors – such as sunchoke donuts with Cabot cheddar and powdered leeks – alongside a selection of biodynamic wines. Spoke has a laid-back energy that’s perfect for lingering over a sparkling chardonnay from California vineyard Donkey and Goat or attending events like book signings and “meet the winemaker” mixers.

Spoke is the kind of restaurant that automatically makes a neighborhood cooler. Their combination of a great wine-by-the-glass list, snacky plates, excellent cocktails, knowledgeable staff, and intimate space pretty much guarantee you’ll have a good time. And that’s whether you’re alone taking down a plate of the mini sunchoke donuts with powdered leeks, or on a promising date tasting a couple of different pours and flexing some wine knowledge (that maybe the staff taught you the last time you were here).

The 10 Best Wine Bars in Boston

Spoke is just enough off the beaten path that the whiskey-swilling Saloon crowd hasn’t discovered it yet, which means it’s the least crowded bar in Davis. Don’t let that fool you -- the service is excellent and the food (especially dessert) is beyond delicious, making it the best date spot in the area. Also, the unusually well-crafted seasonal cocktails will please even those that aren’t interested in popping a bottle.

9 Best Vegan Restaurants in Boston

Spoke Wine Bar may be known for an eclectic selection of European wines and hyper-seasonal small plates, but the Davis Square spot takes as much care of vegan and vegetarian diners as it does any omnivore. The award-winning co-chefs approach dishes to highlight each and every ingredient, whether it’s a Tagine Bean Dip with apricot and focaccia; Celery Stir Fry with yuzu, chestnuts, and maple; or Enoki Cakes with sausage spice and pineapple sauce. Frequently changing combinations are excitingly paired with by-the-glass pours of wine and low-octane cocktails.

Where to Eat in Somerville's Davis Square Right Now

There’s nothing new about “New American” cuisine or wine bars, for that matter, but somehow Spoke has breathed a breath of fresh air into both terms. For one thing, its intimate atmosphere is anything but pretentious, something you’ll notice the moment you slide onto a barstool and a friendly bottle popper offers you Spoke’s compact, small producer-focused wine list, eager to guide you through the grapes. The delicious drinks on the chalkboard menu, meanwhile, will have you pondering whether it’s too late to squeeze “and cocktail” into Spoke’s name.

14 Best Spots To Drink Wine In Boston

You may not immediately think of Somerville's Davis Square as the best place to get a glass of wine, but Spoke will prove you wrong. This much-beloved wine bar doesn't have the longest wine list in the city, but it is carefully and thoughtfully curated, which is a nice break from the pages-long wine lists that can sometimes overwhelm new wine drinkers. You'll find plenty of natural wine on this list, but they're not all fun, spritzy, easy-drinking sippers — there are plenty of serious and unexpected bottles to choose from as well.

The beauty of Spoke Wine Bar in Somerville is the way it meets you exactly where you are. If you’re looking for a quirky wine to impress your natty-loving friend, an enthusiastic bartender will pour a glass to remember, such as a smooth, chamomile-scented roditis from Attiki, Greece, or an herbaceous, mineral godello from Galicia, Spain. If you’re feeling a cocktail, there’s an ever-shifting, globally influenced selection—like the vodka-forward Bury the Glass, with green mango brine and star anise.

This relatively new Somerville wine bar (opened in 2013) has become an instant industry darling. The list boasts a small but smart collection by the bottle, with an overall focus on organic and biodynamic wine and most wines priced out under $75. In addition to the bottle list, there's a constantly changing list of wines by the glass, a solid menu of craft cocktails and a food menu—primarily small plates meant for sharing—helmed by John daSilva, the former executive sous chef at No. 9 Park.
