I stopped in to check out Neptune Oyster in Boston, MA. After nearly an hour waiting in the rain, we finally got a seat in their tiny, bustling dining room - and it was absolutely worth it. The oysters were fresh and briny, the lobster roll was the best I’ve ever had, and the lobster spaghetti was incredible. ⸻ Restaurant Info Name: Neptune Oyster Location: Boston, Massachusetts Cuisine: Seafood /...

Reviews Summary

Neptune Oyster is a highly sought-after seafood destination renowned for its exceptional oysters and legendary lobster rolls. While the small, bustling atmosphere and potential for long waits are frequently mentioned, most diners find the fresh, high-quality seafood to be well worth the experience. Some reviewers note that while the lobster roll is good, other dishes like the clam chowder or certain seafood preparations can be inconsistent.

"This was my second time at Neptune Oyster since I’ve been visiting Boston for the last few years. You have to wait outside till the server sees you. This place is small but completely packed. They only have enough spots for maybe 50 people to eat. Probably one of the best Lobster Rolls in my life. The servers and staff were very nice, we ordered 3 lobster rolls and some oysters. Absolutely a great time.

It’s loud in there new use it is such a small spot. If you are looking for a local spot that’s got great atmosphere and food this is the spot for you. Take time to enjoy the city and the local spots."

Patrick Kelly

"Lobster roll was good but not spectacular. We got it cold with mayo, you can also get it hot with butter. We also got the scallop dish which wasn’t great but not terrible. The scallops tasted extremely fishy and salty. Oysters were good!

We got there at 12 on a beautiful Saturday day and waited about an hour. Customer service with exceptional. The restaurant is very small and not a lot of seating. There is a restaurant across from them that serves cocktails to go that several people got while waiting"

Jen Mitchell

"So, let me answer the question everyone is wondering: Was it worth the wait? The answer is — it depends. If you wait an hour, yes, it’s worth it. If you’re waiting 1.5 hours or more, probably not — unless the weather is nice.

We got lucky. We found a good parking spot where the kids could stay in the car, and the summer weather wasn’t too hot thanks to a nice breeze. That made the wait a lot more bearable.

The first thing you'll notice is how small and noisy the place is. But if you love oysters, this is the spot. You're not likely to find oysters like these anywhere else on the East Coast. They were truly exceptional.

The lobster roll was good, though not the best I’ve had. We also tried the sea urchin — a bit on the expensive side, but we lucked out because it was part of their Tuesday special, even though we visited on a Saturday.

We ordered crab claws too, but cracking them was a hassle, especially since the server forgot to bring us the tools so definitely a hard pass for anyone hate cracking. The tuna was tasty but overly salty at the bottom. The razor clams were oily, but the flavor was excellent, and the mix of vegetables added a nice sweet contrast.

One thing to be prepared for: they rush you. From the start, you're pushed to order quickly. We got the check while we were still eating, and when we tried to order more, our server wasn’t too happy. I get it — there’s a long line and she’d probably been working all day. But still, after waiting about an hour to get in, we hoped to enjoy our meal without being hurried. If you can overlook a bit of attitude, you’ll enjoy the food more.

To be fair, this only applied to our server — the rest of the staff were great.

Overall, this place is a “one and done” for us. The family enjoyed the food, and that’s really what matters. No oyster is worth an extremely long wait — but it’s worth trying once, just to say you had some of the best oysters in town."

The restaurant is very small with limited seating, primarily at the bar and a few tables. It's not ideal for large groups.

While seafood is the focus, they do offer a hamburger and sometimes other non-seafood appetizers. Dietary accommodations should be confirmed directly.

For a potentially shorter wait, consider visiting on a weekday or during off-peak hours. Weekends and evenings tend to be busiest.

While children might enjoy some items, the long wait times and upscale seafood focus may make it less ideal for families with young children.

Cheap Eats Boston

There are two sub-types of New England clam chowder you'll find in restaurants in Boston, the thick, gloppy kind that you can stand a spoon up in but is normally pretty low on flavor (the best place for this arguably is Legal Seafood) and the less thickened kind that actually tastes like clams (good places for this would include Neptune Oyster and B&G Oysters). The Citysearch poll cited above has chowder from places I wouldn't send my worst enemy to, including Union Oyster House, Summer Shack, Boston Sail Loft, Tommy Doyle's, and Barking Crab -- from that list, I'd personally suggest only Legal Seafoods and Great Bay (neither of which I prefer to Neptune Oyster), while Grill 23 and Capital Grille are respectively excellent and good steakhouses which I normally wouldn't associate with excellent chowder.

A hot lobster roll from Neptune Oyster is summertime heaven on a butter-soaked brioche, and bivalve lovers queue up daily to sample the two dozen varieties of oysters chilling in the front window of this diminutive North End restaurant. Fresh-off-the-boat fish and creative takes on New England seafood are the draws here—the clam chowder is made to order, the fish-and-chips uses Acadian redfish (not cod), and it’s probably the only place in town where you can get lobster tacos. Yeah, it’s pricey—hot or cold, the lobster roll will set you back around $30—but share the Neptune Plateau raw-bar plate with your friends and you’ll truly feel like the king of the sea.

Best North End Boston Restaurants and Bakeries to Try Right Now

Best toasted roll, real hot butter on top -- or really, bottom -- with the most generous, huge chunks of New England lobster.” --Suzanne K., Boston resident for 35 years. The city’s lobster roll scene changed forever the day Neptune opened its doors, its warm butter entry becoming the instant obsession of food writers and lobster roll aficionados. Then-chef Michael Serpa wasn’t reinventing the wheel so much as perfecting it: taking a perfect mix of tail, claw, and knuckle, quickly sauteeing it in salted butter (no rubbery overdone-ness here), then stuffing the ample pile inside a perfectly toasted brioche bun.

While Neptune Oyster is cramped, crowded, and almost always filled with tourists, if we’re ever in the area and there’s a break in the line, we’ll absolutely head in and take a seat at the bar, even if we just ate. It’s that good, and it’s the type of oyster bar that makes you wonder why you don’t make plans to house shellfish at 3pm more often. Best Seafood in Boston: Where to Eat It

A tiny 34-seat bistro, Neptune Oyster Bar has served up one of Boston’s best lobster rolls (fashioned cold or hot) in grilled brioche since it opened in 2004. With seven ounces of sweet lobster claw and tail piled into a mouthwatering heap, they’re a tall order even for a hungry set. Top 15 ⭐️ 5-Star Restaurants in Boston That Will Make You Feel Like Royalty

The one and only Ernest Hemingway wrote glowingly about oysters in his posthumously published A Movable Feast: “As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy and to make plans.” So we can only assume he was eating oysters as fresh as the ones you can find at Neptune Oyster in Boston’s North End, just a few blocks from the water. Here you can enjoy all sorts of fresh seafood, from the aforementioned oysters to lobster rolls, octopus, scallops, an even sea urchins. But if the food you’re craving comes from dry land, that’s okay too!

I would say that the one at Neptune Oyster in Boston's North End is definitely on the list. If you can actually get past the lines and secure a seat in this perpetually sold out joint, they have mastered the classic, stuffed with passion and integrity. I prefer their version with hot drawn butter. Belle Isle Seafood Store in Winthrop has a behemoth of a roll overflowing with knuckle and claw that you can chow down on while sitting on their patio watching the fishing boats roll in with fresh catch. I would say a new favorite is at Bostonia Public House in the Financial District. A modern interpretation that includes avocado, coriander, citrus aioli and.....wait for it....BACON. Seriously, how could you go wrong with the duo of lobster AND bacon!
