Harvest has a calm, serene energy, a menu that’s pretty universally appealing (there’s a great chicken breast with mashed potatoes), and it’s exactly where people go to celebrate graduating from one of the several universities in the area. The dark wood makes you feel like you’re stepping into a cozy library or private club, and the outdoor space is equipped with heaters and open year-round. The lamb is always great, or try the rich, creamy ‘nduja and potato gnocchi or the duck breast, which is paired with sauteed apples and roasted Brussels sprouts.

Opened in 1975, Harvest lays claim to being the training ground for many celebrated chefs, including Eric Brennan, Scott Bryan, Barbara Lynch, Lydia Shire and Sara Moulton. Tucked away down an alley off Brattle and Mount Auburn Streets in Harvard Square, Harvest remains one of the top dining destinations not only in Cambridge, but also the greater Boston metro area. Its interior courtyard is a favorite for al fresco eating, while its fireplace is perfect for cozying up during the cooler months—making it a New American go-to the entire year round.

Once a favorite of former Cambridge resident Julia Child, this sophisticated shrine to New England cuisine has been a perennial go-to spot for Harvard students when their parents are in town since 1975. The seasonal menu could feature Cape scallop crudo, fresh pasta with braised veal and pesto, or fresh Cape lobster with lemon hollandaise. The restaurant also serves lunch and à la carte brunch (cinnamon buns on the pastry board are worth the visit alone).

It’s nice to know that old-school Harvard Square hasn’t completely disappeared. The farm-to-table brunch on the garden terrace still delights with seasonal pleasures like Salmon Tartare and Hubbard Squash Bisque plus Hash Browns Breakfast Pizza, prime hanger Steak & Eggs, and Brioche French Toast with candied pecans. If you’re feeling indulgent, a cheese plate and the Harvest Bloody Mary make excellent additions.

For a restaurant just off of Harvard Square, Harvest offers one of the best-hidden outdoor seating areas in Boston. Enjoy the fresh air at this Cambridge institution, where top quality French and American classics have been served for over 40 years. Local favorites include the garlic and lemon crusted tuna and the chicken roulade; and for desert, the taza chocolate cremeux is hard to beat.

Suggested options of Harvest, EVOO, Rendezvous, and Oleana are all excellent, if not cheap eats. Other pricy but good Cambridge options include Salts, Rialto, Casablanca, Sandrine's, Upstairs on the Square, Chez Henri, and Blue Room (this last does a nice Sunday brunch). Rafiki Bistro, Temple Bar, and West Side Lounge are a little cheaper than these.

And another suggestion, also on the upper end of the price range, is The Harvest in Harvard Square. Recently reopened and really good.

The patio at Harvest (44 Brattle St., 617-868-2255) is a plant-lined sanctuary, as is the tucked-away porch space behind Orinoco (56 John F. Kennedy St., 617-354-6900), where Venezuelan and other South American treats are served up in sylvan splendor. A rowdier respite may be found at Charlie’s Beer Garden (10 Eliot St., 617-492-9646), which has its own entrance alongside the venerable Charlie’s Kitchen. Although most famous for its double cheeseburger, the 65-plus-year-old pub and its dog-friendly garden also lay claim to some older local history: According to the Harvard Square Business Association, the garden’s stone wall was reportedly part of the city’s 19th-century retaining walls.

Harvest serves up New England ingredients in a farm-to-table setting, with an open kitchen that allows you to watch the cooks in action. Open for more than 40 years, this restaurant has since been redesigned to introduce fireside dining, though in the warm weather months (or even in chillier temps with heaters), many prefer to enjoy a meal on the private Garden Terrace. In true New England fashion, you can count on a variety of seafood dishes ranging from Scituate lobster bisque to a locally sourced raw bar and Georges Bank haddock.

This venerable, decades-spanning stalwart in Harvard Square, which happens to have one of the best patios around, remains a fine-dining favorite in a trending-casual industry. It’s the kind of place that is excellent for entertaining the in-laws over mignonette-dabbed oysters or boards bearing local cheeses; waffles topped with fried chicken, decadent foie gras butter and wild apple purée; and buttermilk biscuits enhanced with rose rhubarb jam and almond crémeux. Don’t relegate Harvest to special occasions, though.

The Taza Chocolate Crèmeux from Harvest has house-made sea salt, salted caramel, brown sugar granola, milk chocolate, and malt sauce vanilla mascarpone.

Another Harvard Square mainstay that’s a delicious option for brunch is Harvest, and afterwards you can take a stroll along the Charles River. We enjoy their cinnamon bun, yummy mocktails, and delicious lobster rolls but you can’t go wrong here.

Harvest, the Harvard Square mainstay, shares an equally equable ambience. Neutral tones and natural fibers offer a chic airiness, yet Harvest feels solid—like its “classic” shrimp cocktail ($18)—and the bar is a snug haven on a cold, dark night.

Harvest might be the best place to get brunch in Harvard Square. Their brunch menu features everything from East Coast Oysters to Fried Chicken & Foie Gras Waffles. Their enclosed courtyard is the perfect place to unwind with friends.

We came mostly for the desserts, and they are absolutely delicious. The available ice cream flavors were really creative. We chose the pink peppercorn flavor which was fruity and fun to eat.
