Reviews Summary

Big Sur Roadhouse is praised for its delicious food, especially the Roadhouse burger and pulled pork sandwich, and its peaceful, scenic setting with a cozy fireplace and beautiful patio. While many enjoy the friendly service and quick preparation, some find the prices a bit high, and there have been isolated incidents of negative customer interactions.

"Big Sur Roadhouse turned out to be an incredible hidden gem for lunch! While the drive along Highway 1 means losing cell service for a bit, the restaurant is easy to spot right off the main road—no GPS needed. I arrived around noon on a Saturday, and while other nearby spots were packed, there was still plenty of parking and open tables here. At first, the lack of a crowd made me hesitant, but wow, was I in for a treat!

The food was out of this world. I ordered the Roadhouse burger with a side of fries, and both were absolutely phenomenal—easily some of the best I’ve ever had. The wait time was short, the setting was peaceful and surrounded by beautiful trees, and the staff couldn’t have been more welcoming.

Next time I’m in the area, there’s no question—I’ll be stopping by again. I seriously can’t recommend this place enough!"

Sarah

"Hidden gem on Highway 1. Dining options include indoor and picnic/lounge areas in front and back. Oh man, the pulled pork was good (has coles slaw) and shoe string fries are excellent. Beer options include a couple of taps and bottles/cans."

James N.

"Food is decent for a quick snack, however on the pricey side. Two beers, chicken strips and fries were $49. Nice outdoor patio both in the front and back. Clean bathrooms. The front patio smells a bit maybe from the fountains outfront."

Travelers weary from a day of driving can also stop in at Big Sur Roadhouse, which serves pub staples like beers, burgers, and burritos. If deli choices are more your speed, the Big Sur General Store does massive sandwiches like the avocado-, bacon-, and sprouts-loaded Big Sur Hipster — not to be confused with the Big Sur Hippie, a totally different sandwich, stuffed with roast beef, Sriracha, and horseradish cheddar cheese.

The 10 Must Try Restaurants In Big Sur, California

The great thing about Big Sur Roadhouse is that you can come here either to snack on a buttermilk biscuit or to enjoy a full course meal. Chef Matt Glazer’s cuisine is classic Californian with a twist of his native Cajun. Seafood gumbo is therefore to be expected along with blackened local fish or burnt sugar olive oil cake with orange and lemon curd.

A surprisingly design-driven restaurant part of the Glen Oaks Motor Lodge, Big Sur Roadhouse serves sophisticated and beautifully plated meats and fish prepared using classic techniques but served with seasonings and accompaniments inspired by cuisines from around the globe. We loved the “Small Bites” menu, which allowed us to enjoy a wider range of the chef’s creations. Equally delicious for breakfast, lunch, and dinner (yes, we went more than once) but especially nice for cocktails and bites on the cozy outdoor terrace fitted with comfortable sofas and a central fireplace.

Then continue heading south along Hwy 1 to take in some of the famous sites. We drove all the way south to the furthest location we wanted to see and then worked our way back north. At the time of posting this article, the section of Hwy 1 south of McWay Falls was still closed due to mudslides from 2017.
