A surprisingly design-driven restaurant part of the Glen Oaks Motor Lodge, Big Sur Roadhouse serves sophisticated and beautifully plated meats and fish prepared using classic techniques but served with seasonings and accompaniments inspired by cuisines from around the globe. We loved the “Small Bites” menu, which allowed us to enjoy a wider range of the chef’s creations. Equally delicious for breakfast, lunch, and dinner (yes, we went more than once) but especially nice for cocktails and bites on the cozy outdoor terrace fitted with comfortable sofas and a central fireplace.

By this time, you’ll likely be hungry, so stop in at the Big Sur Roadhouse for their famous avo toast, or other wraps or sandwiches. Then continue heading south along Hwy 1 to take in some of the famous sites. We drove all the way south to the furthest location we wanted to see and then worked our way back north. At the time of posting this article, the section of Hwy 1 south of McWay Falls was still closed due to mudslides from 2017.

For food lovers, Glen Oaks Big Sur is also home to Big Sur Roadhouse — open to all on Highway One but an easy jaunt through the woods if you’re staying at one of the cabins — or across the street if you’re at the Motor Lodge. Here, you’ll find high-quality food from chef Brendan Esons in a comfortable setting without tasting-menu expense.

This trail starts on a small turn out about 20 miles south of the Big Sur Cafe, for directions to near the location check out the map at the end of the post. As of 2018, you can pull up Partington Cove in Google Maps. When you reach the turnout, you will see a closed gate and a steep dirt road down to the water and forest below.

The property spans both sides of Highway 1, a combination of 16 motor lodge rooms and several cottages on one side, with cozy cabins and the Big Sur Roadhouse restaurant on the other. We stayed in the secluded Big Sur Cabin, which is on the edge of the property nestled in a beautiful redwood grove along the Big Sur River.

Whether travelers are slightly peckish to achingly famished, they can get their fill at the Big Sur Roadhouse. Big Sur offers some of the most breathtaking hikes along the California coast. It’s one of my favorite things to do in Big Sur. The McWay Falls Trail is a short but iconic option, leading to a stunning viewpoint overlooking a pristine waterfall cascading onto a secluded beach.

The Big Sur Roadhouse was a great stop for lunch with meals made from local ingredients and a farm-to-table menu. The food was fantastic, but we also loved the relaxed atmosphere. Sure, the rich and famous frequent this spot, but it doesn’t feel snooty or unwelcoming.

We particularly loved Big Sur Bakery for breakfast and lunch, their bacon croissant twist is absolutely to die for!. Plus, it is located near the beautiful Loma Vista Gardens venue and has a few shops in the center if you like to shop around for gifts to take home.

For lunch we stopped at the Roadhouse which is simple and good and has a nice backyard. We got sandwiches at the Deli paired with beers at the Taphouse (they are connected), also a great backyard. The Deli is also a General Store where you always end up.
