It's one of the world’s most scenic drives, winding along seaside cliffs surrounded by mostly uninhabited forest. And with no ads or billboards allowed along the whole route, you can understand why Henry Miller once wrote about Big Sur: “This is the face of the earth as the Creator intended it to look". There is a reason why former residents wrote here (think Jack Kerouac's Big Sur), why Ansel Adams took nature photos here, why Trent Reznor created music here, and why over a dozen movies have been filmed here. There’s just something in the air. And you can feel it.

No Highway 1 road trip would be complete without a stop over at the lively Big Sur Deli store. This is where nearby residents come for their groceries and DVD rentals, where local events are pinned on the notice board and where the local lifestyle is on show for the many passers by. The friendly Big Sur Deli staff takes great care in packing lunches from the wide variety of sandwiches, tacos and burritos on offer together with the Deli’s delicious traditional muffins and brownies.

After the Big Sur Bazaar closed in 2008, the Mayer family, who owns the space as well as the adjoining Big Sur Deli next to the post office, put out a suggestion box asking what locals wanted in the vacated business. Among the ideas submitted were recommendations that the spot be transformed into an auto parts store, a hardware store and a gentlemen’s club. But this past Nov. 11, the Mayers opened Big Sur Taphouse, a cozy and eclectic beer bar with 10 California microbrews on tap and a small menu.

The kind of place you only find if you know where to look—wedged next to the post office, hidden behind the gas station. There’s nothing fancy about it, but that’s the point. It’s where locals stop for breakfast burritos before a long shift, where hikers load up on sandwiches before disappearing into the redwoods, where everything is fast, filling, and cheaper than anywhere else along the coast.

Big Sur Deli is the perfect place to grab a quick bite after a long day hiking through the stunning trails of Big Sur. It’s a simple spot, but they really know how to make a great sandwich. When you walk in, it’s pretty straightforward – grab a coffee, pick out a sandwich, and you’re good to go.

We got sandwiches at the Deli paired with beers at the Taphouse (they are connected), also a great backyard. The Deli is also a General Store where you always end up. Fernwood is the other General Store, and between the two I usually find more of what I need at Fernwood.

The grocery store is small but super impressive with the selection of food and beverages. I found some super unique beers (which you can purchase by the can) and they had lots of healthier food options. The taproom and restaurant had awesome deals and really good food.

Swing by Big Sur Deli (next door to Big Sur Bakery) for a quick lunch. It’s conventional sandwich fare, the portions are filling, and the market has all kinds of snacks and drinks. Slide into a seat in the back patio area and enjoy lunch in the sunshine.
