Reviews Summary

Spago is celebrated for its high-quality ingredients, disciplined dishes, and exceptional service, creating a memorable fine-dining experience. While many praise the innovative Californian cuisine and sophisticated ambiance, some find the prices steep for certain dishes, and a few have noted occasional slow service or issues with water pricing. It remains a standout restaurant in Beverly Hills, known for its legendary creations and celebrity appeal.

"Make reservations! The high quality ingredients are worth experiencing. I like how disciplined the dishes are: nothing is over seasoned, flavors just exist on the palate with minimal effort, ingredients speak for themselves. Can feel a bit crammed, loud, difficult to navigate through the tightly space tables, but as a result the energy and the enthusiasm is elevated throughout the restaurant. I DO NOT recommend the salmon pizza. It will make you super full so only order this signature dish, if you are going multiple times, sharing, or are ok with taking food home."

Daniel Jang

"Came to this absolute classic and we were treated very well by our servers - the only reason they lost marks was that it was a little slow between bouts of attention. Food was good, not great, but the asparagus soup was incredible. The atmosphere felt a little fusty, old and low energy - but we did go on a Wednesday. Glad we ticked it off the list"

Julian Bennet

"We love fine dining. We had a wonderful dining experience and the staff was fantastic. Possibly the best tomato soup we ever had!!We will definitely return when visiting Beverly Hills."

20 Famous Los Angeles Restaurants Actually Worth Trying

Fortunately, after nearly 40 years, Spago is both the old standby and the new kid on the block thanks to an ever-changing menu that makes the restaurant seem altogether fresh. Don’t worry, it’s still great even if you’re not here for a power lunch, and you can still ask for the smoked salmon pizza if you crave it. Spago purists will be pleased to hear that Wolfgang Puck’s flagship is still refreshingly old-school when it comes to presentation, though the Beverly Hills menu from executive chef Tetsu Yahagi features contemporary additions, too: chirashi boxes of sashimi with a yuzu-jalapeño gel; scallops with ice plants and kombu; and rye-crusted loup de mer with sea grass, to name a few.

Top 10 Famous Places to Eat in Los Angeles, California

One of many swanky Beverly Hills restaurants that draws more than its fair share of celebrities, Spago is perhaps Wolfgang Puck’s most famous restaurant in the United States. Winner of the James Beard Foundation’s Outstanding Service Award in 2005 and the Wine Spectator Grand Award in 2010, Spago turns out exactingly presented gourmet fare at prices to match. The executive chef, Lee Hefter, designs his menu around seasonal produce, and seafood and pastry chef Sherry Yard’s desserts are worth saving room for.

A guide to Beverly Hills: Best things to do, see and eat

Wolfgang Puck’s smoked salmon pizza is the stuff of legend, created, the story goes, when actress Joan Collins was dining at early Spago (back when it was just a single restaurant tucked away on a West Hollywood hillside across from Tower Records) and ordered smoked salmon and brioche. Finding himself without bread, Puck improvised by using a pizza crust instead. The rest is history and the dish — which layers cured salmon atop dill-infused crème fraîche atop the fresh-from-the-oven crust and is finished with a dollop of caviar — is such a famous crowd-pleaser it’s passed at Hollywood awards-show afterparties catered by the Puck empire and shipped nationwide via Goldbelly.

Where To Eat In Los Angeles: 10 Legendary Restaurants

With the financial backing of a dentist, a young Austrian chef in a baseball cap named Wolfgang Puck, who had gained a reputation at the highly exclusive Ma Maison, and his wife, Barbara Lazaroff, opened Spago in 1982 in a barn-like building on a dreary corner of Sunset Boulevard. Their intention was to serve upscale fast foods like pasta and pizza, including his invention of the “Jewish pizza,” lavished with smoked salmon, sour cream and caviar. Overnight, Spago became the new darling of the hippest Hollywood crowd along with the Old Hollywood crowd, and Puck became the leader of a pack of young chefs who flipped the idea of great food in a grand setting upside down.
