There isn’t much nightlife in Bar Harbor, and the Thirsty Whale is one of the few spots in town open past 10pm. It’s divey in the best way, with thick spear-like fries, tons of lacquered wood-paneling, and servers that will take overfilled shots with you behind a tray to “hide from the security cameras.” There are 14 taps with lots of crushable Maine beers, so you can easily spend an evening debriefing the day’s adventures and plotting which part of Acadia you want to explore next.

The first thing to know about the Thirsty Whale--aside from its excellent fried clams, of course--is that this isn't a posh, reservations-only eatery. It's an authentic tavern and it serves some of the best authentic pub food in Bar Harbor. Just as populated with locals as with tourists, the Thirsty Whale serves a great homestyle fried clam dish, as well as a lobster roll.

With so many activities, we wanted to end our last night with a few drinks which meant the local favorite, The Thirsty Whale (T-Shirt was a must buy). However, another option is to purchase tickets earlier in the day for a movie at the Reel Pizza Cinerama complete with couches and recliners to eat, drink and relax to a movie. Either one will cap off a great stay in Bar Harbor before we make our way across the Canadian border to New Brunswick and St. Andrews by the Sea.

Of course, lobster is a must-try dish in Maine, and you'll find some of the best at Beal's Lobster Pier, Thirsty Whale Tavern and Galyn's. Many visitors also recommend the blueberry pancakes and pies from Café This Way and Jeannie's Great Maine Breakfast. If you would rather pack a picnic lunch for your day in the park, stop at one of the few grocery stores downtown or grab a sandwich from a casual shop like Downeast Deli and Boxed Lunch Co.

Friendly service, fair prices, and fantastic food make the Thirsty Whale a winner in my book. Top all that with a warm, tavern vibe, a fully-stocked bar, and crave-worthy lobster rolls, and you’ve got an all-around champion. The crown jewel of the well-stocked menu here is certainly the aforementioned roll, served in the traditional manner: Tossed lightly with mayo and served on a buttered-and-grilled hot dog bun.

The vegan options are lumped in with the gluten free which is a minus for me. The two vegan options are a beyond burger and a bran burger, and they don't have a non-gluten-free but vegan bun. That being said, if you ask them, they can put it on their ciabatta bun which is vegan and really tasty (just make sure you specify no butter when they grill it)

A close second in the name category behind Stewman’s, the Thirsty Whale is a classic local tavern serving up some great lunch and dinner options. Meals here are on the more casual side, mainly based around a menu of fish and chowder. There’s more to do than just go camping near Bar Harbor, ME (though it does have some of the best camping in the East).

Classic pub fare with an outdoor patio and plenty of drinks to go around at the Thirsty Whale Tavern in downtown. Their beer and cocktail menu has lots of selections featuring Maine breweries and distilleries. I recommend the Cranberry Gin & Tonic made with Sweatgrass Cranberry gin or Sea Dog Wild Blueberry Ale, both from Maine-based businesses.

There is no place to end an evening on MDI quite like the Thirsty Whale. The dark bar is packed and loud with laughter when I arrive. I belly up to the bar for a cold beer and am lucky enough to be surrounded by locals who are happy to share their recommendations as I prepare for my second day on the island.

Stadium: if you are hankering for something sweet – this place has you covered. From homemade pop-overs to cookies and blueberry crumbles, you can’t go wrong with anything they offer. Pop-overs are a staple in Maine and this is THE place to get one – they come with homemade blueberry jam + cream cheese.

Thirsty Whale – I ate here for the first time this spring and I was not disappointed. My mom and I each had a cup of clam chowder and shared a Captain’s Platter that was full of fresh seafood (haddock, clams, shrimp, scallops).

Also on the nostalgia tip: the first place we ever set foot in Bar Harbor (other than our hotel room) way back in 2008 was The Thirsty Whale (40 Cottage St.). Now, as the great Yogi Berra once said, “Nobody goes there anymore.

We tried the Thirsty Whale and we didnt think that the clams were remarkably good. The breading was too thick and they were greasy.

I also really like the lobster roll at the Thirsty Whale, but Side St. has the best full lobster dinner in town.
