Reviews Summary

The Thirsty Whale Tavern is celebrated for its massive portions of fresh, authentic New England seafood, particularly its highly-rated lobster rolls and crispy fish and chips. Diners appreciate the cozy, divey tavern atmosphere and the extensive selection of craft beers, making it a great spot to relax. However, some reviews mention potential inaccuracies on bills and that some dishes, like the lobster bisque, may lack the expected seafood flavor.

"The food was great for seafood lovers. Very fresh and well cooked. The restaurant had very nice and friendly staffs. The atmosphere was great, seating at the bar has its own features and it’s very comfortable. The only things that happened to us was when we requested for the bill, the bill had extra items and almost twice the price. I asked a very kind bartender to address this and he corrected it quickly. I am sure it was accidental and not on purpose. In general deep fried clam was a bit greasy for me but good quality and fresh."

Behnaz Ghaemi

"I will start by saying the portions here are massive! I ordered the blackened fish sandwich and the piece of fish must have been a full pound or more I swear! The only thing I wish was more clear, is that even the blackened fish option is still deep fried. I was trying to avoid more fried food on that day so that was a surprise. It tasted quite oily but otherwise the fish was so fresh and tender it fell apart (this made it super messy and hard to eat. Its a good thing i was with my husband so there was no judgment passed lol). The spiced breading was seasoned really well too. The brioche buns were super soft and tasty and my husband enjoyed his burger! We had the oysters as well and they were quite small. Atmosphere could use some work but overall a good place for lunch!"

Tanya Olivia Ramirez

"By now, I've had numerous lobster rolls across Massachusetts and Maine and this place easily had amongst the top two lobster rolls that I've ever had, being at a tie with another place in MA. I got the 6oz lobster roll and while I was hesitant to have a Maine style roll rather than Connecticut style, I was pleasantly surprised by just how good the lobster roll was. The lobster itself was tasty and had this nice subtle "sweet" taste to it, a taste that made me contemplate ordering a whole second lobster roll just to enjoy some more of it (I didn't but maybe I should have). It came with fries which I thought were pretty good. We had tried the crab roll and it wasn't bad but not really for me, and I'd choose the lobster over the crab any time. I also tried the clam chowder with garlic bread and it was amazing if I'm being honest. This place is not cheap and I thought it would be a typical tourist trap in Bar Harbor but the food is surprisingly good. The service was about as good as it gets as the woman who served us was busy trying to accommodate all of her tables, but she really did try her best. The parking situation though is horrendous. Street parking in front is hard to acquire and there's a large paid parking lot behind the restaurant as well as a small paid lot across the street. Both of these paid lots were filled to the brim with cars and it took a good while before I had finally gotten a spot. If you're gonna drive here as most people do, be prepared to wait for a spot behind the restaurant or park along the street farther away and walk."

The 15 Best Restaurants In Bar Harbor, Maine - Bar Harbor

There isn’t much nightlife in Bar Harbor, and the Thirsty Whale is one of the few spots in town open past 10pm. It’s divey in the best way, with thick spear-like fries, tons of lacquered wood-paneling, and servers that will take overfilled shots with you behind a tray to “hide from the security cameras.” There are 14 taps with lots of crushable Maine beers, so you can easily spend an evening debriefing the day’s adventures and plotting which part of Acadia you want to explore next.

The Best Fried Clams in Bar Harbor, Maine

The first thing to know about the Thirsty Whale--aside from its excellent fried clams, of course--is that this isn't a posh, reservations-only eatery. It's an authentic tavern and it serves some of the best authentic pub food in Bar Harbor. Just as populated with locals as with tourists, the Thirsty Whale serves a great homestyle fried clam dish, as well as a lobster roll.

Bar Harbor, Acadia

With so many activities, we wanted to end our last night with a few drinks which meant the local favorite, The Thirsty Whale (T-Shirt was a must buy). However, another option is to purchase tickets earlier in the day for a movie at the Reel Pizza Cinerama complete with couches and recliners to eat, drink and relax to a movie. Either one will cap off a great stay in Bar Harbor before we make our way across the Canadian border to New Brunswick and St. Andrews by the Sea.

What to Eat in Acadia National Park

Of course, lobster is a must-try dish in Maine, and you'll find some of the best at Beal's Lobster Pier, Thirsty Whale Tavern and Galyn's. Many visitors also recommend the blueberry pancakes and pies from Café This Way and Jeannie's Great Maine Breakfast. If you would rather pack a picnic lunch for your day in the park, stop at one of the few grocery stores downtown or grab a sandwich from a casual shop like Downeast Deli and Boxed Lunch Co.

15 Best Bar Harbor Lobster Rolls

Friendly service, fair prices, and fantastic food make the Thirsty Whale a winner in my book. Top all that with a warm, tavern vibe, a fully-stocked bar, and crave-worthy lobster rolls, and you’ve got an all-around champion. The crown jewel of the well-stocked menu here is certainly the aforementioned roll, served in the traditional manner: Tossed lightly with mayo and served on a buttered-and-grilled hot dog bun.

That being said, if you ask them, they can put it on their ciabatta bun which is vegan and really tasty (just make sure you specify no butter when they grill it)
