Known around town simply as “The Colonel’s” and serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, this restaurant offers traditional fare from lobster rolls and fried seafood plates to burgers and pizza; eat in the dining room, at the bar, or out on the deck in the warm months. In front, the bakery turns out delicious bread, rolls, croissants, turnovers, and muffins as well as cookies, cakes, Maine’s famous whoopie pies, and other sumptuous desserts. Try one of the glazed doughnut twists, with or without chocolate drizzled over the top.

You can enjoy Colonel’s sized-just-right menu any time of year, thankfully; I don’t know about you, but I tend to crave pizza far more during the chillier months. Colonel’s does pizza right, along with the rest of their comfort-food-style fare. You can either build your own 10” or 16” pie, or opt for one of their specialty pizzas; you do you, but I highly recommend the Reuben: Thin slices of corned beef, topped with sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing.

In the little village, you will find an old-time market, the Colonels Restaurant and Bakery (recently reopened after a fire last summer), some antique stores and a few restaurants. One of them, the Docksider could be considered your classic Maine restaurant, with charming "Down East" waitresses, lobster to die for, unbelievable clam chowder, and in the summer, salt air flavored outdoor dining on the doorstep of the Harbor.

The next day, after getting lost on the drive around Acadia National Park, I stopped for a late lunch in Northeast Harbor — the town was much quieter than Bar Harbor, but there wasn’t much selection. At The Colonel’s Restaurant, I found a filling meal of fish chowder and lobster sliders for almost half the price of anything in Bar Harbor (the fish chowder was creamy and full of flavor, as well as large chunks of haddock).

Try out Colonel’s Restaurant in Northeast Harbor for casual pub fare and terrific bakery. And for a traditional lobster boil in an eclectic, roadside attraction experience, try Ruth and Wimpy’s Restaurant in Hancock, Maine. There are 32 lobster combinations on the menu and an 11 foot fiberglass lobster in front of the restaurant.

Don’t worry, a cozy vibe and not being seaside doesn’t mean The Colonel’s is slacking in any way at all. When you are still wanting to get a full hearty meal, start off with the Loaded Chili and a fresh loaf of French Bread. Honestly, that could be a meal by itself, but it’s so much nicer to share with friends.

On the main drag we stop for lunch at the Colonel’s Restaurant and Bakery. We embrace the spirit of this fishing village by ordering fish chowder, lobster rolls, and pints of local beer. We make our way back to the loop and follow it to our next stop: Sand Beach.
