After a few hours of hiking, we decided on take-out again, this time from The Lobster Co in Bar Harbor because no visit to Maine would be complete without a lobster roll. Of course, we each got one roll but we also ordered the fried pickles which were unexpectedly some of the best fried pickles I’ve ever had, if not the best. Again, we went to bed early because we had reservations to watch the sunrise at Cadillac Mountain the next morning, which meant an extremely early wake up call!

The first of the seasonal establishments on this list, BHLC serves up specialty spirits from around the globe, signature craft cocktails, and local brews alongside fresh, local fare and pub food. Located near the termination of the popular Shore Path, it’s a great spot to rest your wander-weary feet whilst you replenish with an ice-cold libation and snack. The BHLC Bermuda Triangle (dark rum, pineapple, peach, and orange juice) is especially reviving.

We then stopped by to pick up junior ranger books and went into town to eat at Bar Harbor Lobster Company. Food is never a focus of our trips, much to my husband’s sadness, but I liked my quirky ginger-coconut chicken banh mi and he liked his fish tacos. The kids were ‘meh’ about it; the mac & cheese came with bread crumbs on top, which neither of them appreciate, and the fish didn’t seem to thrill them either.

Dubbed “Maine’s favorite lobster joint and rum bar,” BHLC is open daily from 11-9, year-round, thus making them one of the go-to favorites for locals and tourists alike. With a simple, seafood-centric menu and two pages of libations—including a long list of both local and international rums—this lively spot is perfect for nibbles, conversation, and cocktails.
