Reviews Summary

Thames Street Oyster House is celebrated for its high-quality seafood, particularly its renowned lobster rolls and extensive oyster selection. Diners consistently praise the exceptional service and classic Baltimore atmosphere, though reservations are highly recommended due to its popularity.

"My foodie companion was craving oysters, so we made an advance reservation to avoid having to wait for a table, as this Fells Point spot can get crowded on a sunny spring day. We were seated upstairs, and the service was friendly and attentive. We started with drinks – for me, an orange crush, and for him, a tall, cold Narragansett – a dozen mixed variety of oysters – the ability to select one or several of numerous varieties was a most welcomed treat – and a bunch of fresh shrimp with cocktail sauce fixings. The raw bar never disappoints – the large, plump crustaceans were delightfully chilled and tender. The oysters came out perfectly shucked and ready to pick up and slurp down – cravings satisfied.

I chose the Friday special Bouillabaisse and was delighted with my selection. A most generous portion of homemade pasta was topped with assorted seafood in a savory sauce - my palate was quite pleased. Stuffed from his east coast oyster tour, my friend opted for the blue crab, short rib soup, and a more than generous portion of the beach fries. He noted the soup had a deep, rich flavor as his spoon danced around the bowl to savor the last bite. The fries proved to be a nice accompaniment to the meal.

If you’re visiting Fells Point, make that reservation, don’t skip a raw bar treat, and enjoy one of old Baltimore’s treasures."

"Exceptional service with exceptional food. We tried all of the oysters, and that was a great experience tasting the subtle differences between them. The lobster tail, claws and u-12 shrimp were delicious. The mussels and fluke were great appetizers and the lobster salad was exceptional. Not cheap to eat like that, but this was a great experience for a special occasion."

Andrew Smith

"I think this was overall one of the best restaurants I've been to. The thing that stood out most was the service, which I would describe as Michelin-lite. Multiple employees even other than our main server coming by frequently to switch out silverware and used plates as soon as we were finished with something. Our main server was new, being shadowed by one of the managers. She did a great job and you would never be able to tell she just started so it seems the quality of the service here starts from the very beginning.

There were some deals on happy hour oysters. There were 4 dipping sauces to choose from which added a lot of customization to the flavor. Being based in the DMV and used to the prices there, it really seemed like we got great value on the food. Not sure if the portion size to price ratio is good for Baltimore standards but at least for us we were very happy with what we got for the price.

I can recommend all of the dishes we got, the Iceberg Summer Salad, Clam Roll and Scallops, all worth it in my opinion. I will say the two people seated near us both got the lobster roll and it looked really good as well."

8 Ways to Spend a Day In & Around Baltimore

It's a good opportunity to eat seafood, and Thames Street Oyster House is known for its crab cake and lobster roll (and long waits). If you get to Fells Point early enough in the morning (or late enough at night—it's open 24 hours on the weekends!), you might get a table at Blue Moon Café. It's best known for the Captain Crunch French toast, which is exactly what it sounds like. If you're looking for something less sceney, head away from the crowds and towards Tortilleria Sinaloa, where they make fresh tortillas and serve a fish taco with Old Bay butter sauce.

Baltimore’s Best Restaurants 2024

It seems like every hip restaurant has a raw bar these days, but well before freshly shucked seafood found itself in the Roaring Twenties-esque revival, there was Thames Street on its cobblestone namesake in Fells Point. For over a decade, owner Candace Beattie and executive chef-partner Eric Houseknecht have helped remind our city about oysters, the shellfish which once reigned supreme along the nearby waterfront long before crab was ever king. And here, in this Chesapeake-meets-New England eatery, those half-shells are served as impeccably as they come.
