Reviews Summary

Terry Black's Barbecue is celebrated for its flavorful, juicy brisket and fall-off-the-bone ribs, complemented by generous portions of delicious sides like mac and cheese and creamed corn. While the quality of meat is consistently praised, some reviews note that the brisket can become dry as it cools and the sauces are considered basic. The friendly and efficient service, combined with a lively atmosphere, makes it a popular destination, though parking can be challenging and the inside can get loud.

"Awesome place to come and eat! Definitely a top spot for brisket lovers in Austin... The main advantage here is that the smokers are enormous and they practically never run out of brisket unlike other smaller venues. Even if you want a late afternoon brisket this is your place to go... Beware of the sides, as the portions are huge and sometimes you think you can eat more than you can actually do. Overall, good food, amazing atmosphere, and one of the best names for brisket in the Austin area."

Everardo Reyes

"Terry Black’s BBQ is hands down one of the most delicious experiences a person can have in their life. The moment the tray hit the table, I knew I was in for something special. The beef rib was massive, smoky, tender, and packed with flavor—the kind of BBQ that melts in your mouth. Every side was on point too: creamy mac and cheese, tangy coleslaw, roasted green beans, and that addicting creamed corn. Even the pickles and onions added the perfect bite between rich, smoky meats.

Yes, it’s expensive—I paid $108 for this tray—but honestly, the quality, portion, and unforgettable taste make it worth trying at least once. It’s not just a meal, it’s an experience.

If you’re in Austin and love BBQ, Terry Black’s is an absolute must. Come hungry, be ready to splurge a little, and you’ll walk away saying it was worth every penny."

Shahab Sassan

"Good brisket but not life-changing. The edges were too dry, overcooked, and salty. The center was much more tender and in line with what I expected from the reviews. Sauces were super basic? The original one tasted like ketchup, just of a watery consistency, while the sweet one was too sweet for my tastes though my friend liked it best.

Cornbread wasn’t too dry and didn’t completely crumble into pieces when you bit or cut into it, although it was a tad sweet. Green beans were surprisingly good in that they were actually green and tasted like beans, so not drowned in bacon fat or boiled into khaki like the “greens” in NOLA. However, they also didn’t have much flavor.

At least the servers were all extremely friendly and helpful and there was air conditioning indoors even though you and your clothes will smell of smoke after. Outdoor seating might be nice when it’s not summer, although there were a lot of not-shy birds hanging around so beware."

Crystal T.

The 15 Best BBQ Spots in Austin - Austin

If you find yourself in Austin with a large group or just generally wanting barbecue in the later afternoon or evening, Terry Black’s is your answer. It has all the charm of older, more rustic places out in the countryside, but it’s conveniently located on Barton Springs Road, right in the middle of town. Brisket and beef ribs are the standouts here, but you won’t be disappointed with a fully loaded tray featuring all the classics, plus a few extra sides of mac and cheese.

Tonight is casual: barbecue at Terry Black’s, or if you’re vegan, the food truck Rollin Smoke for a fantastic vegan barbecue sandwich made with baby portobello mushrooms, spicy slaw, barbecue sauce and pickles. It’s my favorite vegan barbecue sandwich in Austin (who says you can’t have barbecue if you’re veggie?), and it’s located in a food truck park with beautiful old trees shading the tables. Rollin Smoke has very good meat options, too (I’m told).

Best BBQ Restaurants in Austin: Local Barbecue Joints to Try Right Now

$$ Zilker The last name “Black” carries some serious weight in Central Texas barbecue history. The legacy began in 1932, when Edgar Black Sr. opened Black’s Barbecue in Lockhart, a spot which helped establish the small town, 40-minutes south of Austin, as a smoked meat epicenter. Fast forward to the 21st century, when control over the business’ ownership divided the family.

The Best BBQ in Austin

Terry Black’s Barbecue — Terry Black’s is straight-up Texas barbecue, born and bred in Lockhart, the BBQ capital of the world where my great grandparents immigrated from Poland in the early 1900s. Not only are my extended family members who grew up there tightnit with them, but their Barton Springs Road location must be the busiest and most profitable BBQ in town since they are open for lunch AND dinner and consistently packed. They run a full operation here with a great cafeteria-style service line, and the food is always consistent.
