Only at Kemuri can you dig into our iconic Brisket Tsukemen (dipping ramen). This dish has a story that goes way back to the early days of Ramen Tatsu ya, where owner + founder Tatsu Aikawa first experimented with adding Lockhart brisket into ramen for family meals. What started as a kitchen tradition became a full-on Austin sensation, drawing lines out the door and turning brisket ramen into a lo...

Reviews Summary

Kemuri Tatsu-Ya is celebrated for its inventive Japanese-Texan fusion cuisine and unique, cozy atmosphere. Diners rave about the bold flavors and creative dishes like brisket ramen and skewers. However, some reviews mention slow service and occasional issues with spice levels or ambiance like flies outdoors.

"This restaurant serves good food. The cuisine is a blend of Japanese and Texas bbq blended together to create flavours. The service is a bit slow. The pickle plate was served in the end with the check. Good drinks and shareable tapas style plates makes you order a lot of things from the menu so that you can try a lot of dishes which is good. Overall, a nice, cozy restaurant with a great vibe, drinks and food."

"We made a 6.45pm reservation, were seated pretty prompty. However, we were led to an outdoor seating area with LOTS OF flies and mosquitoes. We ordered majority of the skewers. I would recommend the scallop and wagyu skewers. We also ordered the char siew pork belly which was really good. For starters we went with the cornbread which was also good. As for the other skewers (the ones which comes in a pair), I would recommend just trying one or two of them. Some were pretty salty or heavy.

Overall I would say the food is good but I felt that my dining experience was ruined by the flies and mosquitoes. I was fighting to get to my food before the flies did and fighting to not get bitten while enjoying my food. I did end up getting bitten though and having flies land on our food, cups and hands more than once.

The drinks were so so. Would probably not recommend the drinks. They sound fancy but not really tasty. For the price we paid in total, I would probably have gotten a better dining experience somewhere else."

"Fascinating Japanese-Texas fusion concept with bold flavors! 🤔
This restaurant offers a truly unique dining experience with creative Japanese-Texas fusion dishes. The menu features an impressive variety of innovative options that are visually appealing and inventive.
However, be prepared for serious heat! Nearly every dish we tried packed significant spice, which unfortunately made it difficult for me to fully enjoy most of the meal 😅 The spice level was quite intense throughout the menu.
That said, if you’re a fan of spicy food, Japanese fusion cuisine, and sake, this place will be perfect for you! 🍶 The creativity and quality are clearly there - it’s just important to know your spice tolerance before visiting."

The Most Fun Dinner Spots In Austin Right Now - Austin

Part Japanese izakaya and part Central Texas smokehouse, Kemuri Tatsu-Ya is a place where you can get chili cheese takoyaki, smoked eel bento boxes, and yakitori skewers under one roof. And it all happens in a dining room that looks like a Texas hunting lodge that picked up its decor from a vintage store in Tokyo (there are also lots of robots). Japanese-inspired tiki drinks keep the energy going when you start to slow down after a second serving of taiyaki cornbread with sesame butter, and if you need even more energy, head into the bathroom for a simulated thunderstorm over the lights and speakers while you wash your hands.

In Tatsu-ya's Austin restaurants, Japanese food gets a Texas twist

In 2017, Tatsu launched Kemuri Tatsu-ya, which combines Japanese drinking food, Texas smoked meats and other shareable small dishes with an izakaya-style bar. The East Austin restaurant features unconventional dishes such as a jellyfish menudo salad containing hominy — like the Mexican soup it’s named after — alongside smoked brisket boasting a sesame pecan rub and an edamame verde that blends Texas herbs with a shiso leaf pesto. All can be washed down with elaborate craft cocktails and extensive lists of sake and shochu.

This Texan izakaya concept from ramen gurus Tatsu Aikawa and Takuya Matsumoto marries barbecue-inspired Asian dishes with a wide variety of beer, sake, shochu, Japanese whiskey, and inventive cocktails. Start with playful snacks – like their take on a Hot Pocket and chili cheese takoyaki – before moving on to yakitori, kushiyaki, and a menu of smoked items (order the BBQ Boat to try a selection of proteins). Be sure to save room for brisket ramen – around these parts, it’s considered dessert.

The 25 Best Restaurants in Austin

Expertly melding the bones of a Texas barbecue joint with a Japanese izakaya, chef-owner Tatsu Aikawa (of Ramen Tatsu-ya fame) has somehow managed to wrangle the flavors of wood smoke, Tex-Mex, yakitori, sashimi, and a whiskey tumblers’ worth of stoner food into their honky-tonk-by-way-of-Tokyo. Instead of Frito pie, you get chili cheese takoyaki brimming with octopus fritters and beef cheek chili. The banana pudding skips the dollop of Cool Whip for matcha and miso caramel.

From the chef/owners of Ramen Tatsu-Ya comes Kemuri Tatsu-ya, offering its own brand of ramen. Based on past Ramen Tatsu-Ya collaborations with Franklin’s BBQ, some speculate the brisket used in Kemuri’s ramen is Franklin’s own!. It’s a toss-up as to which Kemuri offering is best, the Texas Ramen with said ‘Franklin’ brisket and a classic execution or with a savory, thick dipping BBQ ramen serving up that same, melt-in-your-mouth brisket.

How to Spend a Long Weekend in Austin, Texas

It was only a matter of time before the BBQ-loving cultures of Japan and Texas came together, and we’re lucky it came together so beautifully in the form of Kemuri Tatsu-ya. A casual izakaya spot that’s only fault is making it so difficult to choose from all the exciting inventions on the menu (chili-cheese takoyaki?! Tokyo street corn?! Smoked fish collar with yuzu salt?!). The cocktail menu matches the inventiveness of the food.
