Cute” is probably the first word we’d use to describe Hillside Farmacy, a former pharmacy in East Austin with cabinets full of vintage medicine bottles lining the walls. The menu leans classic American, featuring things like burgers, roasted chicken, and a very solid mac and cheese. And on Sunday nights, it becomes a steakhouse.

Hillside Farmacy is popular for their oysters, reliance on local farmers, and wordplay -- and also their diet-destroying mac 'n cheese. This version is coated in Mornay, which is a béchamel sauce that is thickened with cheeses, usually Parmesan and Gruyere. Toss in some herbs, top with breadcrumbs, and you have yourself a party.

Operating out of the old Hillside Drugstore from the 1950s, Hillside Farmacy has become the premiere brunch spot in Austin. Although renovated with sleek interior design, the restaurant has kept some of the aesthetic of a 1950s pharmacy to give patrons a vintage yet modern feel. As its name suggests, Hillside Farmacy — a farm-to-table restaurant in East Austin that specializes in local ingredients — inhabits a space that once served as a neighborhood drugstore. The beautiful building dates back to the 1920s, when Dr. Ulysses S. Young, who was one of only a handful of Black pharmacists working in Austin at the time, purchased the property and operated Hillside Drugstore. The drugstore remained in business until the 1970s, and subsequent tenants included a barber shop, a bookstore, and a sandwich shop.

Considering that the term “farm-to-table” has been usurped by “natty wine” and “tinned fish” in the PR buzz cycle, it’s brave to proudly hang your hat on that culinary trend today. But, hey, when local farmers have a habit of dropping by to offer okra flowers or borage microgreens before service, it’s hard to fake who you are. With produce also provided by co-owner Sonya Cote’s Eden East Farm in Bastrop, chef Tony Henderson goes to town creating the freshest takes on dishes that reflect his Gulf Coast roots.

Housed in a historic East Austin former pharmacy, the beautifully restored space offers a well-curated menu of eclectic American fare with a Texas twist (e.g. the Tex-Strami sandwich comes with House made pastrami, pickled red and green cabbage, provolone cheese, and paprika aioli). The cocktail and wine menu is longer than the food menu, which just proves they have their priorities in the right place.

If you’re ever near Lott Pocket Park, drop in at Hillside Farmacy. This eatery that specializes in brunch has so much history packed into a quaint and cozy building. In the 50s it was an actual pharmacy, and it was closed in the 70s, but it was restored and declared a historic landmark in 2019.

Though I don’t make it over to this little east side spot very often, they do have several house-made non-alcoholic drinks like fresh pineapple limeade (yum) and the Hot Country Doctor, a warm drink with ginger, fresh apple and cinnamon.

Known for its breakfast and brunch, this café is reminiscent of a little French patisserie (with an Austin twist, of course). Be aware, you’ll want to be prepared for a long wait time on the weekends!

When you typically think of mac n’ cheese, you’d be hard-pressed to think healthy thoughts. Hillside Farmacy, though?. They turn this notion on its head.

I love their gluten-free sandwiches and the malt vinegar fries are out of this world!. It’s a little less pricey than Launderette, with a similar vibe.
