Better Half is probably a much better spot to check out just for lunch or cocktails. Many of their booths were marked off for laptop use (which I totally get for people to have lunch), and the only seats with outlets were with uncomfy stools. Definitely not somewhere I’d try to work again, unless it was cooler and I could sit outside. #atx #austintx #austincoffee #remotework

Reviews Summary

Better Half Coffee & Cocktails offers a vibrant atmosphere and enjoyable food, with many praising the breakfast sandwiches and unique patio space. However, some reviews point to inconsistent coffee quality and issues with service, particularly during busy periods. Despite mixed reviews on certain dishes, the overall vibe and potential for a good cocktail experience keep patrons coming back.

"Better Half has been on our radar for a long time now, so we popped in for a late weekday breakfast.

The property is really nice with a number of inside seating spots as well as plenty of outside seating under some lovely, old oak trees.

We ordered the Breakfast Sandwich (with sausage), the Fried Chicken Biscuit (spicy), and the Cauliflower Tots. Even though they were a bit busy, the food came out quickly.

Both sandwiches were really delicious. The flavors in the breakfast sandwich all melded together really nicely. The chicken was cooked to perfection and the biscuit was buttery and fluffy. The tots weren't our favorite, but they were nice and crunchy with a sweet beet ketchup.

I'd love to come back to try more items from their menu as well as their coffee and cocktails."

Brittany Enfield

"Great Vibe and Good Food, Definitely Worth a Visit

This is my third time coming to Better Half, and once again, it didn’t disappoint. I ordered the half Chop Chop salad, the single chicken bacon burger, and a veggie burger.

It’s hard not to like this place. The amount of property they have means you can almost always find a seat, which is a nice. If you’re into alcohol, I’m sure you’d really enjoy it here as they have a great selection. It’s hard to beat a $7 chicken/beef burger though the patty itself is a bit on the thin side.

Everything was solid—the food was good, the service was friendly, and the atmosphere was enjoyable. It definitely feels like a spot that you could always go to and know what you’re getting."

Austin Mayer

"This place is definitely popular, but I found myself underwhelmed by the famous cauliflower tots and the breakfast sandwich. They didn’t live up to the hype for me. The cauliflower tots were crispy but, like the breakfast sandwich, could benefit from more flavor. However, the beetroot ketchup had a unique taste to it. On a positive note, the lemon olive oil cake and the queso were delightful.

As for the coffee, I was disappointed. The caramel sea salt cold brew tasted more like vanilla, with barely any caramel or sea salt flavors coming through. The lavender latte was watery. Overall, nothing really hit the mark.

The best part of the place, though, is definitely the vibe. The outdoor patio is spacious, with plenty of shaded seating and a cozy bar area in the corner, covered in vines and string lights. Inside, there’s a nice mix of seating options so whether you want a couch or a high table they have it all.

And they have a little kiddie pool outside where you can dip your feet, which is nice, and dogs are allowed, so if you’re just looking for a chill place to hang out, it’s great, but I wouldn’t go out of my way for the food or drinks."

Restaurants in Austin

Local critics consistently rank this West Sixth Street hot spot as one of the area's best restaurants, and the sprawling patio is almost always packed. It's a lovely downtown-adjacent atmosphere to enjoy upscale, indulgent takes on juicy burgers and pastrami (as a sandwich or a queso topping), and with great coffee and cocktails served all day to boot. There are even more burgers at the Quonset hut next door, where Hold Out Brewing slings food and beer all day.

These 10 beloved Austin neighborhood restaurants are as unique as the city itself

Parked squarely amid the hustle and bustle of downtown Austin, this West Fifth Street hot spot could have easily faded into its noisy surroundings and become just another flash in the pan. Luckily, for neighborhood locals who appreciate both a lively morning meal and a lip-smacking evening burger with a side of pastrami-loaded queso and a few stiff cocktails, this all-day cafe is here to stay. This neighborhood joint recently updated its menu, rolling out tempting new dishes like crispy pork belly with refried black-eyed peas, and shrimp and crab-finger orzotto, a must-have risotto-style plate.

The 25 Best Restaurants in Austin

When Better Half’s trio of owners first moved into their Clarksville digs in 2018, Matthew Bolick says there was a bit of an intimidation factor to the neighborhood. Coming from the laid-back confines of their East Side coffee shop, Brew & Brew, the regular sight of Maseratis and a well-coiffed clientele had them hesitating on what they did best. Or, as Bolick explains: “We didn’t dare be too loud.” Three years later, they’ve not only ditched those informal rules (old guard wine, and “safer” crowd-pleasers like chicken-fried steak), they’ve completely rewritten the playbook for casual dining.
