Don’t let Pancho’s Taqueria get overshadowed by its next-door neighbor, White House Subs—this taco spot is worth going out of your way for the tender chunks of beef tucked into homemade tortillas. Snag one of the few wooden tables, or take a seat at the tiled bar where you can watch your tortillas toast up on the plancha. It’s an ideal spot for a pit stop when you’re waiting to check into your hotel or if you’re morally opposed to spending triple digits on dinner before a show at the Hard Rock.

Thanks in no small part to a 2016 co-sign from star chef David Chang in his now-defunct magazine, Lucky Peach, which described Pancho’s as “the best Mexican food on the East Coast,” the restaurant created inroads into the nearby student populations and tourists alike. After eating there, I understood why. The tacos suadero (brisket) and lengua (cow tongue) were very good; the al pastor though, excellent.

In a modest space in the Ducktown neighborhood (right next door to White House), you’ll find some of the region’s best tacos, piled with cilantro and onion-flecked seasoned pork, brisket, or goat on made-to-order tortillas. This restaurant is all about tacos but these are made as they should be: handmade tortillas, carnitas and al pastor, lengua and chivo (this means a goat). If you are looking for something to drink here, you will get a beer or a margarita all the way until midnight. And of course, at midnight is when beer and margaritas turn into a pumpkin because their time is up.

Located next to the famous White House Subs, Pancho’s is an unpretentious stop for excellent Mexican eats. Fabiola Sanchez, who is Colombian, opened Pancho’s in 2006 “as a typical Mexican taqueria to serve Mexicans and Latinos who work at the casinos,” says her son, Joshua Cruz. Together, they do all the cooking “in front of our customers,” Cruz says.

Pancho’s Mexican Taqueria is pretty much the place for tacos anywhere in the eastern part of the United States. It’s not the kind of place you go if you want something with a lot of ingredients or a dish that’s overly refined. No, this is the place you go when you want tacos.

If you want simple very authentic and delicious Mexican cuisine Pancho’s is the place. You can watch them cook up your meal, sit at simple tables with dining room trays and enjoy some of the best Mexican food here in New Jersey. They have won many restaurant awards.

The taqueria, open since 2005, is easy enough to find; it’s right next to fabled White House Subs. It’s one of those stark, spare eateries that often outshine fancier, more heralded spots. What’s special about the al pastor tacos?

Despite getting the most recommendations on our informal Facebook survey this one fell a bit short for us. We give Panchos good marks for authenticity. They even make their own tortillas on site and they use fresh ingredients.
