Reviews Summary

The Optimist is praised for its exceptional seafood, particularly the fresh oysters and wood-fired dishes, and its trendy, coastal-inspired atmosphere. While many highlight outstanding service and delicious food, some diners have noted inconsistencies with certain dishes like the lobster roll or find the wine portions small. Desserts are also a point of discussion, with a lack of vegan options being a noted drawback for some.

"Fantastic restaurant! We went there for our 23rd anniversary, and everything was exceptional. From the hostess to the busboy, everyone warmly wished us a happy anniversary. They even brought us complimentary wine to celebrate.

Our server, Autumn, was absolutely wonderful—if you can, definitely ask for her. She had a fantastic personality, gave spot-on recommendations, and truly made our dinner feel special.

We enjoyed an Old Fashioned, oysters, mussels, redfish, and finished with the banana split for dessert. Everything was absolutely delicious."

Comanche Pacheco

"We celebrated my husband’s birthday at this restaurant — and we were absolutely delighted! 🥂 The atmosphere was cozy, the service was top-notch, and our waiter was especially attentive and kind — thank you to him for the care and warmth.

The food truly deserves special praise:
the oysters were incredibly fresh,
the Arctic char was perfectly cooked and melted in the mouth,
and for dessert, we had a delightful meringue dessert — light, well-balanced, and absolutely delicious!"

Olga

"The Optimist...because of its rave reviews, we went here for my birthday. My honest opinion is overall, it was an 8 out of 10. The service, Donnie and Emma were great! The rolls that they bring to your table, I tried not to eat but one bite and they were gone soft, buttery and a little sweet. The Lobster Rolls were a good appetizer, I could have eaten a couple of those. Our entrees, the Flounder and Blacken Arctic Char, were ok, but what I enjoyed the most about our entree was our side of what they call Kedgeree (a fancy fried rice) so flavorful! The drinks were really small lol but good as well."

The Best Places To Get Oysters In Atlanta - Atlanta

The Optimist, a West Midtown seafood powerhouse, rightfully remains the most well-known spot to snag high quality oysters. That’s because there's a nice range of options here, including all the usual suspects from Powder Point to Mere Point, and a daily happy hour when you can roll up and get as many as you want for $1.50. There's an outdoor dining area which, like the massive, modish dining room, is always full so reservations are a good idea, but walk-ins can usually find a seat at the raw bar, where staff shuck and plate these briny beauties.

12 Best Seafood Restaurants in Atlanta for Fabulous Fresh Fish

You’ll feel like you’ve escaped to a seaside resort when you step into this nautically-designed spot on Howell Mill Road. The modern interior features a designated raw bar and a dining room that feels anything but landlocked. Start with tuna crudo or smoked fish dip with a round of handcrafted cocktails, then choose from the ocean-fresh menu featuring whole roasted fish, lobster rolls, Spanish octopus, poached swordfish, and more seaworthy delights.

Best Seafood Restaurants in Atlanta: Top Spots to Order Seafood From Now

The Optimist sits on congested Howell Mill, but once you approach the patio and lawn (complete with a putting area) you feel removed from all of that. The restaurant has strong coastal vibes, especially the bar, which is sunny and features an oyster bar. Start with one of the crudos (like the cobia with strawberry gazpacho, orange gremolata, and almonds), some crispy oysters, and a lobster roll.

75 Best Restaurants in Atlanta

Ford Fry’s sterling fish camp has survived and thrived since its 2012 opening thanks to high-level executive talent leading the way, from Adam Evans (who recently picked up a James Beard Award) to Pat Pascarella (who just opened Bastone across the street) to Brian Horn, who expertly trims the sails today. Start things off with warm, creamy she-crab soup or seafood gumbo that boasts a perfectly penny-dark roux—in addition to, of course, amazingly fresh oysters on the half shell. The most ideal supper then proceeds to fish, any fish—Thai-style branzino, swordfish poached in duck fat, a simply dazzling Arctic char with salsa verde—all roasted in the restaurant’s blazing wood hearth.
