One of the most iconic hotels in Aspen, and it’s only five-star ski-in/ski-out hotel, The Little Nell offers several dining choices, including the famous Ajax Tavern (see below). However, for a blowout evening meal, it’s hard to beat suave Element 47 with dishes like locally-raised wagyu tartare, Golden Kaluga caviar with lemon soufflé blinis, and truffle agnolotti with wagyu and foie gras. The restaurant also serves princely breakfasts (try the Turkish lamb and eggs or lemon soufflé pancakes) and end-the-ski-day lunches, with excellent soup and salad combinations and delicious wagyu pastrami sandwiches on rye.

While skiing or snowboarding at Aspen Mountain, refuel with a stack of pillowy pancakes at Bonnie’s or a cone of crispy truffle fries at Ajax Tavern (which also offers some of the best people-watching in town). Spending the day at Snowmass means treating yourself to a long lunch at Sam’s, an upscale Italian restaurant with awe-inspiring mountain views from nearly every seat. And if you don’t mind getting sprayed with a little champagne, end your day at Aspen Highlands with lunch and apres at Cloud Nine, the lively ski-in, ski-out cabin where travelers and locals alike love to let loose.

When it comes to après it's hard to top Ajax Tavern, which sits at the base of Aspen Mountain ski area and has a wonderful sun-drenched patio that will entice you to put up your ski legs and order a cocktail. The casual, yet quality menu makes sticking around for dinner a no brainer — especially if you're craving truffle fries and a wagyu double cheeseburger. Indoor and outdoor seating is available, and reservations are recommended.

You can’t beat the Ajax Tavern for après-ski, thanks to its indoor-outdoor mountainside location inside the Little Nell hotel resort. Watch skiers glide down the slopes from the sunny patio, or squeeze in some quality people-watching inside the tavern. The kitchen serves incredible yet unpretentious American and French food, such as a wagyu cheeseburger with truffle fries; lamb bolognese; and fresh oysters, shrimp and crab.

So close to the gondola you can keep your boots on while dining, this upbeat restaurant in the Little Nell hotel has big glass windows and a spacious patio with slope-side views. Large wooden beams, red booths, and sleek furnishings define this spot, which is popular both for its location and its hearty surf-and-turf dishes. The menu changes seasonally and focuses on Colorado ingredients.

The most popular restaurants at the moment tend to be either French bistros, such as the beloved Cache Cache and the new Rustique, or Italian trattorias such as the foot-of-the-mountain Ajax Tavern and the hip new Gusto. Rustique is a paean by chef-owner Charles Dale (who also runs the sophisticated Renaissance) to the kind of hearty French fare you crave after a winter's day on the slopes or a summer's trek through the mountains -- authoritative steak frites, steaming cassoulet, lusty navarin of lamb, braised short ribs pot-au-feu and what he calls the "Weird Dish of the Night" (always $20), which might be sweetbreads with chanterelle mushrooms, veal tongue with a tangy sauce gribiche, or maybe skate with beets in brown butter. For dessert, the profiteroles in chocolate sauce are not weird, just nonpareil.

A towering cone of truffle fries is the trophy to which everyone in Aspen aspires, even if the competition is just a race up the stairs to Gondola Plaza or a game of bocce at the base of Aspen Mountain. Aside from the famous frites, Ajax Tavern is known for the Wagyu Double Cheeseburger—an upscale take on the Double Double Animal-style from In-and-Out Burger—made with local wagyu beef, onion aioli, and a fresh baked bun. Pro Tip: If you have adventurous little ones, check out the swankiest kids’ menu in town with options like gruyere mac and cheese and salmon with green beans.

As for après—because, even amongst this pandemic, you can’t miss out on a couple after-ski drinks and grub—we stopped by the Ajax Tavern, located right next to the Silver Queen Gondola at the base of Aspen Mountain. A few orders of truffle fries and a round of Chai-tinis for the table did the trick. But, if you’re looking for little more low key scene—fireplace, couches, the whole sha-bang—head over to the Limelight Hotel for the longest Happy Hour in town; it’s just a two minute walk from the base of Aspen Mountain and they’re dishing out drink deals from 4PM to 7PM, nightly.

Although this list isn't ranked, we kind of have to give an "epitome of après ski" award to The Little Nell. Located at the base of the Silver Queen Gondola, Ajax Tavern’s outdoor patio has prime views of skiers making their way down the mountain along with a parade of jet-setters going in and out of the renowned hotel. There’s usually a wait for a table to dine on stellar French-American bistro fare (the truffle fries are a must, $17), but an additional outdoor bar, the occasional Veuve Clicquot pop-up, and a DJ spinning beats will help you pass the time.

As is our wont, we first tried new places or new chefs at old places, of which there were/are eight: D19, Jour de Fete, Texas Red’s BBQ, Dish, Brunelleschi’s Dome Pizza, Plato’s, Ajax Tavern + Crust. We skipped Jour de Fete, because it's a breakfast-lunch place and Crust, a pizza place, because it is at Aspen Highlands, but hit all the rest.

The moment we checked into The Nell we hit the slopes for a few runs for just enough of a workout to to jumpstart our appetites. We handed our gear over to the freindly ski valets (this is a full service ski valet) and hit up Ajax Tavern for two orders of our favorite Wagyu Bolognese. My BF knows better then to ask to share this with me!

The airport's proximity to town, Ajax, Highlands and Buttermilk mean that skiers don't need a car (another way to save dough). Most hotels in town will pick up their guests for free or for a nominal charge. Flying on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays offer good discounts compared with peak days, especially Fridays and Sundays.

This pass will get you access to all 4 mountains including Highlands, Buttermilk, and Ajax. The positive side is with a pass this expensive it keeps the number of people on the mountain down. Included in the Aspen Pass will be the Ikon base, if you wanted to venture to other resorts such as Copper, Steamboat, or Winter Park!

On the first Sunday of AGSW, the location for Mountain Du Jour is Aspen Mountain, then the festivities move to Highlands for Monday, Snowmass Mountain on Tuesday, and back to Ajax. On Thursday, expert skiers are invited to hike and ski the challenging Aspen Highland Bowl, all while wearing their gayest ski attire.

My ski buddy and I had a good powder day at Snowmass, then decent spring skiing at Ajax the next day. By the third day, it was too warm on the lower mountain at Aspen Highlands to ski at all. High 50's by lunch time.

That said, come April 1, many fine-dining restaurants (check out spots like Ajax Tavern, Creperie du Village, and Rustique) offer killer deals; check with your concierge or scan the local paper for ads.

The peak comes in at 11,212 ft, so get hydrated and well fed at the Sundeck (stir fry, chili, more), Bonnies (pancakes!), or my favorite – Ajax Tavern (truffle fries!) at the base of the mountain.

He’s part of the Aspen Ski Dogs gang, who have been known to good-naturedly bark at newbies on a powder day to startle them, and he’s skied on Ajax Mountain every day this season.

Après ski is what we do best in this town, and Ajax Tavern is the place to see and be seen!. In the summer, the outside deck's large umbrellas make for amazing al fresco dining.

This is a new restaurant from the former chef at the Ajax Tavern, Dena Marino. It's owned by the same folks that own The Wild Fig. Dena's specialty is homey Italian fare.

Ajax Tavern has my favorite order: an Aperol Spritz and truffle fries. Plus, it is a MUST for Vegans with the best cauliflower gratin and a great vegan mac and cheese.

The Ajax Tavern at the base of Aspen Mountain can get crazy crowded, but that’s for a good reason, it’s a great place for apres ski drinks and snacks.

We also went to Ajax Tavern and enjoyed some amazing burgers and fries. This place is known for the air amazing burgers.
