Reviews Summary

The Market Place is celebrated for its commitment to farm-to-table cuisine, featuring fresh, local ingredients and expertly prepared dishes. Guests frequently praise the flavorful food, attentive service, and cozy atmosphere, making it ideal for special occasions. While generally highly rated, some diners note that certain dishes can be pricey for the portion size.

"Amazing experience on the patio (our dog was allowed). Food and cocktail were great and allowed us to experience local products and flavors. The stars of the show were the heirloom tomatoes and the grilled peaches with ham. Definitely recommend."

Jean-Philippe Therriault

"We’re so glad that we celebrated our sixth wedding anniversary with The Market Place. We always want to try a farm to table restaurant. Not only was the staff very friendly, but the atmosphere created a very romantic mood. The food was simply amazing. We highly recommend experiencing this wonderful establishment, and make sure to leave room for dessert."

T.A Sultaz

"We’ve been waiting to dine at The Marketplace for a special occasion. We finally stopped by for dinner for our anniversary and now I’m wishing we had gone sooner.

We had such a lovely experience. Glenna really made the night extra special. Well to be honest all the crew we encountered were wonderful.

The food was fabulous. We got a variety of different sized plates and enjoyed eating and drinking and celebrating.

We couldn’t resist the fries, the peaches were lovely for summer. The trout was delectable. It was all so delicious. Save room for dessert.

Now that we’ve been I would love to stop by more often and enjoy a light bite at the bar or on the patio."

Things to Do in Asheville, NC: How to Help Hurricane Recovery

Chefs like Katie Button of Cúrate, Meherwan Irani of Chai Pani, and William Dissen of The Market Place have established Asheville as a culinary destination, blending regional traditions with inventive flavors. Asheville’s farm-to-table movement began long before the concept was trendy, with Mark Rosenstein opening The Market Place in 1979 as one of the pioneers. In 2009, chef William Dissen took over the restaurant, maintaining the ethos of working with local purveyors—and the restaurant was nominated for a James Beard award for Outstanding Restaurant this year, its 45th year in business.

Asheville’s Food Scene Is Staging Its Comeback After Hurricane Helene

Like Button, Meherwan and Molly Irani have worked hard to lead Asheville’s culinary community toward its post-Helene recovery, and I still dream about the dinner I had at their restaurant Chai Pani, which offers creative but loving versions of Indian street food. I couldn’t stop reaching for more okra fries, shatteringly crisp slivers of the vegetable tossed with exactly the right amount of salt and spices, while the succulent beef bihari kebab, marinated with green papaya, red chile and yogurt, disappeared from my plate alarmingly fast. And the spring-green uttapam special—a pancake made from fermented rice and lentils, stuffed with ramps, rapini and other local vegetables—was a seasonal delight.

The Best Restaurants in Asheville for 2025

The Market Place has been around since 1979, which in Asheville restaurant years makes it basically a historic landmark, and its James Beard Awards nomination in 2024 for Outstanding Restaurant in America was a reminder of just how good it is. Chef William Dissen was a champion of farm-to-table before it became a marketing gimmick, and it shows in the menu: Appalachian trout with roasted garlic, perfectly seared scallops, and a rotating cast of seasonal dishes that always feel like they belong exactly where they are. If you want to taste what made Asheville’s restaurant scene what it is today, this is the place.
