The White Spot Cafe, established in 1946, is an old-school lunch counter that serves up a lightly battered halibut sandwich revered by Anchorage residents for decades. Similarly old-school and just as beloved is Arctic Roadrunner, which serves salmon and halibut burgers topped with traditional fixings and one of the best onion rings in town. Their dining room is a treasure trove of nostalgic Alaskana, and on nice days you can eat your lunch outdoors along Campbell Creek.

The halibut sandwich at the White Spot Cafe – I forbid you from eating this sandwich for the first time when you are not sitting at the bar in this historic Downtown hole-in-the-wall on Fourth Avenue. The halibut sandwich tastes best when you can watch it being made – fresh fish battered and fried golden, a squishy white bread bun pulled from the bag, iceberg, American cheese, and tartar stacked in a tower. That first bite is all crunch, salt and tang.

The White Spot is in downtown Anchorage and even though the street out front was closed for repair the place was still packed with customers eating in and picking up to go orders. There are several tables but the best seats are at the counter overlooking the small kitchen show. They are known for the halibut sandwich but you’ll find lots of house made, fresh options here.

White Spot Cafe is one of Anchorage’s long-time restaurants, dating all the way back to 1959. It recently changed hands in 2017, but remains an Anchorage landmark, most well known for its halibut sandwich and fries.

The most important meal of the day kicked my rear into gear for sightseeing at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. White Spot Cafe filled me up with nosh until I waddled out their doors.
