Reviews Summary

Spenard Roadhouse is widely praised for its creative comfort food, friendly service, and welcoming atmosphere, making it a local favorite. Diners rave about standout dishes like the Veggie Benedict and the exceptional mac and cheese, as well as unique cocktails. While most experiences are positive, some minor complaints about seasoning or ingredient freshness have been noted.

"All 5 stars across the board! I had the Schnitzel dinner, and coming from a person test was raised in a German household, this was as good as I've ever had it! They have a great selection of local brews and I tried an IPA with my dinner and afterwards polished the night off with a top shelf whiskey and it couldn't have been smoother. I really enjoyed my night here and will always be one of my favorite eateries in anchorage."

Alexander Herlant

"I absolutely love this place! Their vegan dishes are delicious, especially this new VCC dish, Crispy Tofu Protein Bowl! The server split a single serving into 2 bowls so we could share. I hope this makes it to their permanent menu"

Jennifer Garafolo

"We loved the atmosphere here. The playlist was good. It got louder when more people came in, but it was the buzz of everyone talking normally, not people hollering to be heard over the din. The staff was very nice.

The drinks were delicious. I got the Rhubarbara Streisand and my wife got the Orange Sunryse with gin instead of whiskey.

My wife got the Reindeer Scramble with tots. She said it was delicious. The eggs were seasoned. It was spicy, but not too spicy. She made a point to note how incredibly fresh all the produce is.

I got the Veggie Benedict with a side of mac n cheese. Usually when they say pesto is an ingredient, you can barely taste it. Not this time!! And the mac n cheese.... omg chef's kiss!!! The sauce was creamy, the crumb on top was flavorful but without being too salty, the noodles were just right. I eat a lot of bennies and a LOT of mac n cheese. This was by far the BEST benny and the BEST mac n cheese I've ever had out.

1000/10 most highly recommend"

The restaurateurs behind South Restaurant and Coffeehouse (pictured above) are also the masterminds behind two other stops on this list: Snowcity Café and Spenard Roadhouse. What differentiates South isn’t just the décor, the slightly off the beaten path location next to an industrial plot or the vibe — it’s the menu, which has more than 25 gin varietals, a rotating draft of local beer and high-end cuisine. The dishes are served tapas style and are meant to share, and all feature as much Alaska produce, seafood and meat as possible.

A common Anchorage misconception is that the Spenard Roadhouse on Northern Lights Boulevard and the Castle Megastore on Fifth Avenue buildings used to be Pizza Huts. The roofs, in particular, are somewhat Pizza Hut-shaped, but they were previously Sizzler steakhouses. At their peak, there were three Sizzlers in Anchorage, the previously mentioned two plus one on Dimond Boulevard.
