Locally loved, Glacier BrewHouse is the perfect place to warm up with friends on a cold Alaskan night – open fires and the smell of timber invite guests into this rustic gastro-pub. Renowned for its rotisserie- roasted meats, wild Alaskan seafood and hand-crafted ales, Glacier’s menu is hearty and comforting. Guests should sample the king crab legs, the seafood chowder, and their self-proclaimed ‘world famous’ bread pudding – vanilla custard, apples, currants, and caramelized pecans in a Yukon Jack sauce.

The scent of hops permeates the cavernous, wood-beam BrewHouse, where at least a dozen beers are brewed on the premises. Locals mingle with visitors in this noisy, always-busy heart-of-town restaurant, and dinner selections range from chili-lime shrimp to fettuccine jambalaya and fresh seafood (in season). Summer reservations are recommended, even for lunch.

Warmed by a flickering fireplace in the center of the expansive open room, Glacier Brewhouse lures fans in every season for wings, brick-oven-baked pizzas, steak and seafood, sandwiches, burgers and an array of desserts to wind down the meal. Last, I tried their oatmeal stout - a deep, velvety brew served on nitro The flavors were somewhat subdued, but there was a nice oatyness that complimented the coffee and roasted flavors nicely This beer really comes into its own when it is aged in oak barrels formerly used to hold Jim Beam (before he escaped) The depth of flavor increases ten-fold, and there are notes of both the whiskey and a cherry-like fruitiness For best results, try the standard stout first, then the oak-agedIt should also be noted that the Brewhouse fare, while a bit expensive, is quite delicious, especially if you enjoy fresh seafood, and the service is excellent

Located downtown along 5 th Ave, this is one of the more upscale establishments in terms of breweries, so if you are looking for higher end seafood and steak dishes, Glacier Brewhouse does a decent job (though I would argue 49 th State gives them a good run for their money in terms of quality and lower cost). Their macadamia crusted Halibut is one of my favorites in season, as well as the Rockfish. They do a great job with the calamari at Glacier, and that is one of our go-to appetizers.

Executive Chef Jeremy Fike is a great addition to the brewhouse. Glacier Brewhouse has a separate part of their kitchen for orders that come in flagged with food allergies. They wear gloves, have separate utensils, plus pots and pans that are used for that specific order.

In fact, the Glacier Brew House was the best establishment that I set foot in (IMO, of course). It was much better than it counterparts in Portland, and, from what I could tell, Anchorage lacks the type of fine dining scene that is typical in other mid-sized cities.

Some good ones have already been mentioned such as the Glacier Brewhouse (my son’s family favorite but not really gourmet). Even better, next door is Orso (Italian gourmet) owned by the Brewhouse. But these aren’t the real class ones; I could go on and on here.

Head to Glacier Brewhouse and enjoy a more upscale environment along with some of the best local brews in Alaska. The burgers here aren’t usually the main show, which says a lot about their other menu items considering how absolutely mouth-watering they are.
