Fire Island, in the heart of South Addition, one of Anchorage’s oldest neighborhoods, handcrafts an astonishingly delicious array of baked goods, breads, sandwiches, and savory delights that keep locals lining up for more. The bakery uses as much local produce as it can squeeze into its scones and muffins, offers interesting flavor combos, and serves up a tofu banh mi that is one of the finest tofu sandwiches known to man. Both of Fire Islands locations have a distinct neighborhood vibe, making them feel like a secret only you and select others are in on. As you may have noticed, my September 2024 trip was a bit of a research trip for restaurants in Anchorage – I made sure to visit many places I had never been before that others had recommended so I could add them to this list. Another such spot was Fire Island Rustic Bakeshop, which I have been recommended to many times and visited with my fellow Alaska blogger friend Jennie. We met for breakfast, and had to sample more than we could possibly eat in one sitting: she had the breakfast flatbread and a berry scone, while I had a gooey egg breakfast sandwich and a savory apple gruyere sage scone.

Founded in 2009 by Janis Fleischman and Jerry Lewanski, this family-owned bakery focuses on clean, bright flavors using premium ingredients like dark cocoa, bourbon vanilla beans, and toasted hazelnuts. Wild Scoops downtown is our local ice cream shop with crazy delicious flavors. If you're downtown, New Sagaya City Market is where the neighborhood shops and gets their coffee. Perfect place for visitors to load up on food for road or train trips.

Much beloved bread bakery Fire Island Bread has a completely vegan menu section that is sure to please the discerning carb lover. Choose from decadent shortbread cookies, apple crumble tarts and a wide variety of homemade breads.

Within walking distance of so much activity in downtown, the bakery soon blew up with customers, especially as word of mouth spread of their delicious wares!. They continued their pattern of opening bakeries in neighborhood settings, and the next one opened in Airport Heights a couple of years later.

Fire Island Rustic Bakeshop has a popular location on K Street downtown. But its Airport Heights shop has a little area for outdoor seating in the back. With easy access to the Chester Creek Trail, it’s helpful for fueling up on your next trail outing.

This downtown bakeshop has chocolate croissants, danishes, scones, tarts, cupcakes, cookies, and every type of sweet bread you can think of. And it’s all made right in front of your eyes every morning. I dare you to go there and not buy a sweet treat.
