Le Mirage is an all-around excellent Syrian bakery filled with every type of pastry, cake, tart, and cookie you could want. But like skipping to your favorite track on a greatest hits album, we can't ever go here without ordering their baklava and bouza ice cream. The baklava is the best in the neighborhood (a high distinction in Little Arabia), but it’s the bouza that is worth a road trip just to eat.

But Nakhal is most famous for his bouza, a Syrian ice cream created by pounding a mixture of orchid flour and mastic with a massive wooden bat inside a freezer shaped like a drum. The result is a dough-like ice cream with a consistency like marshmallow upon which Nakhal sprinkles pistachios before serving it with fruit and rosewater in an elegant glass cup.

In addition to eclairs, cannoli, cheesecake, strawberry tarts, baklava and the standard cakes and cookies you'll find at most bakeries, Le Mirage specializes in delicious Middle Eastern sweets. These include maamoul (crumbly cookies stuffed with pistachios, almonds or date paste), mhalaye (a Syrian milk pudding) and ghraybeh (tubular shortbread cookies rolled in crushed pistachios). But what Le Mirage Pastry is famous for is its booza, a chewy, fluffy Syrian ice cream that's pounded into existence using the resin of the mastic tree.
