Reviews Summary
The Big Texan Steak Ranch is a celebrated Texas institution, famous for its iconic 72oz steak challenge and lively, authentic cowboy atmosphere. While many rave about the flavorful steaks, generous portions, and fun experience, some diners found certain dishes, like the brisket, to be dry, and service can be inconsistent during busy periods.
"A Must-Visit Experience at The Big Texan Steak Ranch!
Driving through Texas on Route 66, we searched for dining options near Amarillo and this place caught our eye due to its good ratings and numerous reviews. And wow, it certainly lived up to the hype!
From the highway, their marketing is noticiable, and upon arrival, the place is massive, with a big parking lot that, despite being busy, made finding a spot easy.
After about a 10-minute wait for our reservation, we were easily seated in their spacious main dining room or one of their various areas, including a bar where you can wait.
Our waitress greeted us very kindly, and the first delightful surprise was a basket of freshly baked, soft, warm rolls with butter – absolutely delicious! In fact, we asked for more.
The food itself didn't disappoint. We ordered a Big Texas Top Sirloin and a Brisket Sandwich, both very tasty. It's clear it's not just clever marketing; the food is genuinely good.
A unique draw is their famous 72-ounce Steak Challenge: if you finish it in under an hour, it's free. They have a raised table with timers in the middle of the dining room for those taking on the challenge, which is quite entertaining to watch.
Although the food took about 15 minutes, the wait was pleasant thanks to our attentive waitress, who offered more rolls and drinks.
The prices felt reasonable for the quality, the vibrant atmosphere, and the sheer size of the place.
Opened in 1960, it's more than just a restaurant; it's a true tourist attraction. Without a doubt, we would visit again. Highly recommended if you're passing through on Route 66!"

"I ordered the brisket combo my husband ordered a steak the steak was really good.
The brisket was unfortunately very dry—I couldn’t even chew through one piece. I mentioned it to the waiter, and she was great about it. She spoke with the manager and had it removed from my tab, which I really appreciated. The atmosphere, on the other hand, was fantastic—people were happy, singing, and having a good time. If you’re from out of town like me and looking for a steak spot, this is worth a visit, but I personally wouldn’t order the brisket again."

"This was my first time eating here and my girl.Second time and the food was delicious. Surprisingly, there was no availability online, so we had to walk in and make reservations, which you can also do walk ins and we were surprised as we were told one hour, but got served before that. Depending on the group of people you are with, it will benefit you. If you either by a pitcher or a tower, if you are drinking beer. The food was delicious as we both had a t bone stake and it was well served, and we also got to view two people, which only one made it to eat the 72 ounce steak. The dessert was amazing and a must try at the end. If you have enough room. We ended up going back for breakfast. The next day and it was well worth it, and we also got what was half a liter of mimosa, and let me just tell you they are strong. Overall, the price, it's worth the experience. If you don't mind paying a little more compared to roadhouse, but believe me, you will not be disappointed."

Local artists offhandedly mentioned it as one of the attractions of the city, along with the much more famous Cadillac Ranch, Amarillo Ramp, and of course, the Big Texan Steak Ranch, home of the 72-ounce steak. When I heard a little more about the mall, I built up a picture of it in my head: an outdoor strip center in disrepair that houses the studios and showrooms of local artists and opens to the public once a month for the city’s First Friday art stroll. I never imaged the mall as an actual, indoor shopping mall, complete with a food court, mall walkers, and individual storefronts with window displays meant to entice passersby.
