Reviews Summary

66 Diner offers a fun, nostalgic trip back in time with its retro decor and classic Route 66 ambiance. While many praise the hearty comfort food, delicious milkshakes, and friendly service, some diners have found the food to be inconsistent, with occasional issues in preparation and ingredient balance. The atmosphere and overall vibe are consistently highlighted as major draws.

"Very cool place! The decor, the staff uniform, the menu, and the general atmosphere makes it seem like a little pocket out of time. I got a Fender Bender (half size of the Pile Up) and a slice of strawberry rhubarb pie. Even the half size was more than enough food for me! I've never had a rhubarb pue before but it was very warm and tasty."

Emily Yolo

"Great atmosphere, extensive menu. We weren’t too hungry after a late lunch, so we ordered light. (had I been hungrier, I would have gone with a burger, because other customers burgers looked awesome). Our server Lila was attentive and wonderfully personable. Special for us was the Watermelon Gazpacho offering as their soup of the day. It was delicious and a real treat."

Todd I

"It's like taking a trip down memory lane, with both the food and the decor. I hadn't had an ice cream soda in years, but you can get all flavors here, and real milkshakes, too. At night, the outside is fantastic. It's a great place for a meal, or just dessert. The staff were friendly and super nice, too."

Known as “America’s Highway” and celebrated by author John Steinbeck as the “Mother Road,” the legendary Route 66 meandered across 2,448 miles of the fruited plain, crossing three time zones and eight states as it traversed from Chicago to Los Angeles. For many—especially destitute sharecroppers fleeing Oklahoma’s devastating Dust Bowl—Route 66 held the promise of a better life. For others, Route 66 brought a sense of connectedness with parts of America previously considered difficult to reach.

Cuisine of the Crossroads: Historic Diners on Albuquerque's Route 66

66 Diner glows bright at the edge of the University area, west of the University of New Mexico. The skeleton of this restaurant is originally from 1945, when it was built as a Phillips 66 gas and service station. In 1987, the building was repurposed by Tom and Christy Willis to become a black-and-white checkerboard, sock-hopping ode to the 1950s diners that once dotted Route 66.
