We had such a lovely time at @thestarinnthecityyork on Friday night. It’s a real taste of the country right in the centre of York — fresh, seasonal food, a gorgeous riverside setting and such a welcoming atmosphere. No wonder it’s one of York’s best restaurants! Reviews Summary

The Star Inn The City garners praise for its beautiful riverside setting and the quality of its modern British cuisine, with many highlighting it as a top choice for special occasions. However, some diners find the pricing to be on the higher side, with occasional inconsistencies in food quality and portion sizes.

"We had a few beers by the riverside, clean glasses, good service. Happy little spot right beside the bank on a. Sunny day.

Beers on draught were tasty and mellow, not overpowering, great for a summers day. Atmosphere was good, busy but not overly loud.

Breeze by the river great, would highly suggest."

Jay Efford

"Been here a few times, sometimes fabulous and and sometimes just OK. Efficient and helpful greeter. Table really quite close to the next one. I think this is why the music is quite loud to try to stop conversation from the next table intruding. The music choice was truly terrible though: those slowed down lounge jazz pop and rock classics. I didn’t think Phil Collins’ Against All Odds could get any worse!
Food. Not bad but could be better for the price. Sunday lunch menu. Sirloin just ok. Veg a bit limp. Enormous Yorkshire pudding which seems to have concentrated on size rather than quality as it was a bit dry. High risk I guess, serving Yorkshire pudding to Yorkshire people.
Fish is usually huge and excellent. This was just a fritter and a bit disappointing compared to previous visits
Service very nice (although comms suffered probably because of the background noise and the wrong dessert was brought first time).
Outside on the deck is lovely in warm weather
So, quite good. Could be better for the price. Will probably come back but not for Sunday lunch, which is a posh version of what you can get in a pub. The lunch at the Guy Fawkes pub near the minster is better quality and better value and I’ll head there next time."

Jon Lund

"The Star in the City remains one of my all-time favourite go-to spots, offering a consistently top-tier experience across the board. Nestled right on the river, it boasts a naturally vibrant atmosphere that shines in the summer sun and feels just as inviting during a cosy winter evening by the fire. The food is always outstanding, matched perfectly by attentive and polished service. While it is on the pricier side, the quality, setting and overall ambience make it well worth the spend."

In warm weather, the terrace of this popular spot on the river is the place to see and be seen, with patrons soaking up the sun, rosé blush in hand. Time was when upmarket restaurants paid less attention their beer menu than they did to their Twitter feeds – and most of them hadn’t heard of social media !. Andrew Pern’s polished jewel housed in a converted pumping station on the banks of Ouse next to Lendal Bridge is appositely representative of a certain breed of restaurateur who wants to get all components of the epicurean experience right and that extends to having a well-chosen selection of beers. Yorkshire’s the capital of UK brewing with over 170 breweries and for an establishment that promotes it’s Yorkshire roots throughout its menus it also stocks two excellent local craft ales in Bad Seed’s session IPA & Great Yorkshire’s Blackout.
