What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Rule is praised for its great atmosphere, friendly staff, and good food, especially for boozy brunches and casual dining. While many enjoy the craft beer selection and lively ambiance, some reviewers mention slow service and occasional issues with food preparation like burnt pizza crusts or hard desserts.
"I was at The Rule recently for a boozy brunch and had an absolutely amazing experience. The food was awesome – tasty, fresh, and just the right portions. The drinks were flowing and strong enough to keep the brunch vibe alive 🍹😄
A special shout-out to James for his exceptional service – super friendly, attentive without being overbearing, and really made us feel welcome. It’s rare to get that kind of energy these days!
For the price, food, drinks, and the chilled-out ambience, it’s 100% worth it. I’ll definitely be back again soon. 🙌"

"Visited recently for a boozy brunch! 2 of us are expecting so were on mocktails but they were amazing!
Shout out to Megan who went above and beyond to make us feel as included as the drinkers. She was more than happy to experiment so we still got our espresso martini cravings met! 😂
She wasn’t overbearing but was always available when we needed anything.
She managed to move our booking to accommodate us outside in the sunshine too which was fab.
The food was also great!
Will definitely be back again!
Thanks Megan! ☺️"

"Great food, great drink, and that’s about it. Despite being a chain the food was cracking, and the boozy slushies were more than enjoyed as it was 28° when me and my friend visited. Friendly staff, but slow service. Waited at the bar in excess of 5 minutes to order drinks, there was no queue, just no staff behind bar.
Lovely member of staff took some music requests, which was very nice.
Atmosphere is a bit dull, I however visited on a weekday, I could imagine it being more lively and vibrant on a weekend. Would definitely pop in again next time I’m in St Andrews."

A Night Out in St Andrews
There are a nice mix of pubs and bars to suit every taste and occasion, from the more hip student haunts like The Rule and The Vic, to the more down to earth Drouthy's or The Whey Pat (which are technically old man pubs, but students love them too and the Whey Pat has the best nachos in town). Many of the pubs are hotel bars, but some are very good and not just full of golfers, for example 1 Golf Place and the One Under are popular with students. For the 'higher class' of student (aka yahs) theres Catch and Ma Bells, which are nice but can be pricey.

Your Guide To Eating Vegan in St Andrews
The Rule is a location that many students frequent for a Wednesday night out, but it also has a killer menu that was revitalized last semester. It now offers several plant-based options, including vegan tapas, a vegan chilli, a baba ganoush, and sweet potato pizza. A number of their sides, including the chips, sweet potato fries, seasonal vegetables, and beer-battered onion rings, are also vegan.
A Definitive Guide to Every Bar in St Andrews
In a cruel twist of fate, St Andrews has its best weather during exam season. You can bet that as soon as a couple of sunrays pierce the grey Scottish sky that The Rule beer garden will soon fill with irresponsible day-drinkers, downing pints like there are no very important exams tomorrow. Speaking of pints, the Rule has the cheapest of them all.

The Bars of St Andrews
Tied for last place are the Vic and the Rule: two establishments which score low on the vibe scale. These popular going-out bars/clubs are suitable for a long night out, but fail to deliver in terms of drink quality and price. Each earns points for its outside area, which provides respite from the crowd and noise.
St Andrews: Pub golf and other pursuits
Staying on South Street, The Rule has always been one of the liveliest pubs in town and, particularly when there’s a tournament on, there’s a good chance you might spot a celebrity in here. It’s pretty spacious and has a garden out back. This hostelry can get quite busy later on.
