The line of customers outside might be a bit off-putting, but just focus on the sweet smell of fish-and-chips from St. Andrews's best chipper. There's a busy light-filled dining room and modish seating area, or you can carry out and eat on the university grounds (though be wary of the dive-bombing gulls). The menu also offers tiger prawns, seared scallops, burgers, and a fish of the day, but you can't go wrong with the battered haddock supper with chips.

As well as traditional haddock and chips, savour freshly caught scallops with chorizo and capers. I then plumped for an Arbroath Smokie and lemon butter with chips - exquisite.

I have just had the most delicious fish and chips in Tail-end. I am a coeliac and I could not fault how attentive the staff were making sure that for the first time in years I could eat a delicious plate of traditional fish and chips that were completely gluten free. The atmosphere was super and the staff were attentive.

The best fish and chips to be had in St Andrews and a wide variety of dishes available. All fish supplied is from their own fish house in Arbroath, G&A Spink Fish Merchants and can be cooked in batter, breadcrumbs or grilled. Homemade delicious chips are gluten free and are blanch fried in beef dripping.

If you fancy some delicious fresh seafood, pop inside the Tailend Restaurant at Market Street in the town centre. They offer both takeaway and sit-in options. During our visit, we tried their Cullen skink, Arbroath smokies and traditional fish and chips with mushy peas and tartare sauce on the side.

Many claim the best fish & chips in St. Andrews is found at Tailend. Although we usually strive to remain neutral on such topics, we can’t help but agree. Tailend has a lovely dining room where you can enjoy both fish & chips and a varied menu of local seafood.

Carry on to Market Street for lunch at The Tailend Restaurant. This seafood restaurant serves freshly cooked fish caught in nearby Arbroath. Eat in or grab a portion of their classic fish, chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce to take away and eat on the beach.

To mention but two, Haar is an upscale place for a meal, while Tailend is a informal spot great for fish and chips. Arbroath smokies and hot smoked salmon are also on their menu It’s in the town center; Haar is near the Old Course.

Cromar went on to open Tailend Restaurant & Fish Bar on Leith Walk then Tailend in St Andrews before opening Cromars.
