The Balgove Larder’s emphasis is on a farm-to-table approach to food, with all of its produce being locally sourced.

Just half an hour up the road from Bowhouse – or a five-minute drive from St Andrews – you’ll find Balgove Larder at Strathtyrum Farm. Far from any ordinary farm shop, at Balgove there’s a café, outdoor takeaway, steak barn, butchery, garden shed, and a popular market night, which runs throughout the summer (May to September) on the first Tuesday of the month. Founded in 2010 by Will Docker and his business partner, Henry Cheape, the vision here is to showcase locally sourced, quality produce that helps support small-scale producers, while putting a passion for food at the fore.

Located just outside St Andrews, Balgove Larder has introduced a new food offering this spring, with the launch of its pizza box. The mobile food truck will serve up a menu of sourdough pizzas from a converted shipping container and customers will be able to enjoy a pizza with a range of toppings that puts provenance to the fore. Toppings include salamis from the family-run Great Glen Charcuterie and local cheese from the St Andrews Farmhouse Cheese in the East Neuk of Fife, as well as other great Scottish ingredients and a guest pizza of the day.

Situated just North of the Home of Golf, the farm shop boasts a hipster's dream of homewares and gifts, it's own butchery, deli counter filled with freshly baked goods and a rainbow of local fruit and veg line the entrance!. Shelves are packed with pantry essentials as well as craft beers, whiskeys, gins and good old fashioned Scottish foodie favourites - think shortbread and tablet!.

Its farm shop is stocked high with Scottish goodies, such as Pittenweem Preserves, Heather Hills Honey, and a generous butchers, that many modern high streets are now lacking. And, whilst Balgove’s café is perennially popular, the Steak Barn is gathering its own following, dishing up hearty burgers, steaks and kebabs. Look out for the monthly Night Market coloured with drink and live music — a grown-up, nocturnal approach to food markets.

I fell madly in love with Balgove Larder, a modern farm shop with two restaurants. Cafe/shop combinations that specialize in artisan products make my heart swell with happiness and, more often than not, tend to leave my pocketbook empty. The cafe serves farm fresh eggs, locally grown bacon, and other simply prepared homemade foods, while the market sells a wonderful selection of UK-made provisions and home goods.

In a former sawmill beside their farm shop and restaurant the team at Balgove have opened a Steak Barn serving their own steak, sausages and burgers on a massive wood fired BBQ. There is a lovely, cosy atmosphere here and the steaks are large, juicy and delicious. A good selection of sides, and twice cooked chips, and a large choice of drinks, this makes for a brilliant evening with friends.

I LOVE a farm shop, and Balgove Larder is up there with the best. I will know I’ve succeeded in life if I can afford to fully stock up my flat each week with the fresh produce, deli-delights and sweet treats on offer in this place. Located just off the A91 just outside the town, Balgove Larder pays tribute to all the fantastic local food that Scotland has to offer.

We browsed the general store, noting the substantial produce selection and knick-knack gifts, then sat down for tea, hot chocolate and scones. On the property is also the Balgove Larder Steak Barn, and a cow pasture sporting the infamous highland cow.

Starting in April, the September one was unfortunately the last scheduled one for 2015- although there was talk of a potential Christmas themed market in December.

The aim is to use locally sourced ingredients almost without any miles, ensuring every dish is fresh and flavoured. From hearty sandwiches to fresh salads, their lunch menu has something to satisfy every palate.
